AJ's Turbocharged GT86 Build

Hello everybody,
This is my 1st post on this forum, but I have been lurking around and reading for quite a while

I go by AJ, and I recently acquired a 2013 GT86
The car belonged to a friend who had done quite a bit to it already, I just imported it today, and I am looking to document what I do to/with the car

I am new to the platform, but I am not new to cars
So I would like to learn as much as possible from members with more knowledge and experience

This is my baby, for now

Why did I buy the car?
  • Well, I decided that I wanted a toy that I can track regularly, and with relative low running/service costs
  • I want to do more DIY jobs, experiment with the car if you will
  • I want to get into drifting and see how I like that
  • All in all, just wanted a track/drift toy that I can enjoy
  • I had a "thing" for the BRZ/FRS/86's since they came out, I just wouldn't be happy if I never owned one
  • My other fun car is built aggressively, I wanted something simpler to enjoy!
Goals?
  • Improve cooling systems so I can enjoy the car as much as physically possible
  • Keep the build neat
  • Will add to this once I figure out more
Car History

I've owned and built (well, had built mostly) a few good cars, but they were mostly regular use/street cars. Never had a dedicated track or drift car in the past, and that is why I've always had a thing for S2k's, GT86's and such

The cars I've owned in the past are
  • 2005 Toyota Avalon Limited | SOLD
  • 2006 Toyota Yaris YR | SOLD
  • 2008 Honda Civic Mugen Si (Supercharged) | SOLD
  • 2008 Subaru STi (Basic Mods) | SOLD
  • 2010 Subaru STi (More Than Basic Mods ) | SOLD
  • 2000 Honda Civic EX | SOLD
  • 2013 Nissan GT-R (Alpha 12) | Current
  • 2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS | SOLD
  • 2014 Audi A6 | Current
  • 2011 Mercedes C63 AMG | SOLD
  • 2012 VW Golf GTI | SOLD
  • 2016 Mazda 6 | Current
  • 2013 BMW M5 | SOLD
  • 2013 Toyota GT86 | Current

I will keep posting more and updating this thread hopefully as I go

-AJ

Update (Saturday, May 13th, 2017):

I'm prepping the car for track days and some drift events
The main concern I have is cooling as I would love to enjoy the car as much as possible without worrying too much about extreme temperatures

So I went ahead and ordered the following

  • Koyo Radiator
  • Carolina Dyno Slim Dual SPAL 12" Fan & Shroud Kit
I am also looking into water/meth injection (Aquamist System) to keep the IAT's down while tracking

This is what it usually looks like

and this is what it looks like in drag/roll race mode (excuse the low quality/phone pic), will post some photoshoot pics after the subtle updates soon!

I will post plenty of pictures and videos once I'm done with the planned mods, and get the car cleaned up

Engine bay shots

I need to clean things up a bit, new filter, all black lines instead of black and blue, routing of lines, new turbo blanket
It's work in progress! always is

So I just got the car washed
These are some phone pics that I snapped just now

A different angle of the wheels

Tucked in

The 6 and the A6 got washed too

Things I need to change here
  • With the current alignment specs, I need to run a front spacer to get the front to sit "flush"
  • Tail lights must go, I think I want to get a set of Toms tail lights with Tap Turn relay
  • Chrome garnish around the exhaust must go or get repainted in black
  • I think I want to remove the TRD spoiler, and push the SARD wing further back. Not a huge fan of the current look

Thanks! Those wheels look great and I normally don't like wheels with a lip like that, but those look badass on your car.

Might I suggest the 2017 tail lights? Love mine!

Thanks for the compliment
I'm usually the same way, I like JDM looking 1pc wheels such as Advans, Volks, etc
But I really like how these look on the car so I think they are staying for now

As far as the tails, I think I'm gonna take your advice
While I like the Toms set better, I know OEM will be way more reliable and cleaner

Were they a simple plug and play, or do you need to get a relay for those too?

They are completely plug and play, no relay required.

However, you do need to purchase OEM gaskets for them - if you just order the lights themselves they do not come with gaskets.

Got mine here: http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/toyo...-s-brz-86.html

Thanks for the info

I sent them an-email to get a shipping quote to me and will probably order the tail lights from them soon

The car is so much fun, I am in love with it, but I think I want a little more power
There aren't a lot of shops here that work with FA20s, and I don't trust the engine will handle much more boost. So most likely I'll give it more boost and start considering a future swap

Even though I'm in love with the idea of a 2JZ GT86, ever since I saw Kanoo's, I think an LS would fit my needs better

Been reading a lot of swap blogs/threads, and the amount of keyboard warriors is unbelievable Just want to make sure I consider all my options before making a decision
