I remember the older Toyotas were like that as well, on the bottom.

I like changing the oil on my mountaineer. I just drive it up so the front wheels are on top of the curb and that gives me plenty of room to work under it.

The cool part about it being on top is that for someone working from home can easily get to the filter without making a mess. When it's on top gravity causes it to drain back into the engine rather then on your hand as you screw it off. Also it's easier to remove(cap wrench needed) with no over tightening issues requiring a screwdriver and a hammer...lol

Also a lot af the cap wrenches come with a nut welded into them that matches the socket for the oil plug....

Some newer Toyotas still have the filter on the bottom. '03 RAV4 I have kept the filter on the underside. Oil spills aren't much of a problem... plastic bags work wonders. And no need for a wrench.

230PS would do it at that weight but I am hoping they hit a lower curb weight

I can't help but imagine the amount of work it would take to move it lower and farther back . The block excluding the intake sits below the tires, amazing.

That rear suspension looks pretty low and that diff looks small. It might be the perspective but I have to wonder what mm width it is.

That 2010 engine they are displaying must be for the AWD Subaru's since the intake faces back instead of to the front like the Coupe. Right?

Oh and and carbed boxer .

Edit:

And it appears that our photographer wears shiny shoes and a suit.

I'm still left wondering how close this car really comes to showing the internals of the actual production BRZ. Anyone notice that the concept still has rear-mounted front brake calipers while the mule has forward-mounted ones? Hmm.....

As far as the engine goes, it appears to have no variable valve lift/duration control whatsoever, as there isn't any extra height to accomodate rockers, so I certainly hope this isn't it...

Mm... I hate to appear bothersome, but what does that mean if they have no variable valve lift/duration control? How does this compare to one that does? Thanks!

So variable valve lift just means the cam lobe profile is essentially switchable, not just phasing where they change when it opens and when it closes but still using the same cam lobe, just changing its rotational position relative to the crankshaft. The most advanced variable lift systems control lift and duration together, allowing a huge decrease in pumping loss and thus a huge increase in fuel economy. On the performance side, what they allow is greater power because the lift and duration can be rpm optimized.

I am fairly sure any variable lift system uses some sort of intermediate rocker to create that effect, and this usually adds some height (Valvematic ZR engine for example, is 34mm taller over the regular dual VVTi ZR without lift control IIRC) over the intake valves. But this engine looks to be the same size as the previous one, so the only extra space you get to stick something like this in there is however much they trimmed off the stroke length, which is probably not very much.
