Beyond the looks (and that's debatable, I see Tesla myself) that is in no way shape or form a 4-door 86. It is competition for the 3 Series, Guila, C Class, A4, etc.

There is a place for a car like this and it is great when we get options like this. The initial reviews look good. But the driving experience will be nothing like an 86 and shouldn't be compared. Cars can be great in their own way if people just stopped trying to make them what they are not.

Exactly! Most of them had a great wagon counterpart that you could equip with the big engine, manual transmission, and LSD! They even made an M5 wagon out of the E34. Shame that Americans are stupid and BMW lost their way

I would totally buy a 4-door 86 (stick, RWD, sub 3,500lb).
It wouldn't even need much power (I'd be ok with the existing 200 if the weight was kept low, and I wouldn't want more than 280hp).

My reason is that I want to be able to share the car (and the joy of driving/riding in it) with my wife and kid. My current fun car does not allow this, so I'm resigned to driving an appliance for all family duties.

Unfortunately, there is only one of me - and I suspect there aren't enough people with similar preferences to make the business case compelling.

I don't care about this being only auto. If it's fun enough (like my frs) I know I won't miss the third pedal, except on rare occasions.

I'm totally into the idea of an affordable (maybe?), Lightish, rwd, 4dr car.

The more I think on it though, the more likely I am to just keep the frs and continue driving it until it falls apart. No serious qualms with it, except that I have a rattle in the exhaust that I haven't been able to pin point, but I'd attribute that to not actually getting it in the air and putting the effort into finding the problem.

Precisely what you describe existed, and nobody bought it, they pulled the MT option and they're killing the ATS altogether soon I think.

Chevy keeps trying, GTO, SS, CTS-V wagon, the ATS, and nobody bites.

They're going to try a Buick wagon, but I bet it meets the same fate. If you legit want a fun, rwd, 4-door with a MT, hit up used ATS and CTS ads, may not be a great idea long term but should offer a fun few years.

Most of those have been out of my price range until recently. Will check the used/old stock market in the coming months to see if a trade would make any sense for me
