What is with Porsches and BMWs all looking the same?

Out of all the car companies out there, the greatest offenders are those two companies. Their respective line of cars just looks same-ish.

I understand the need for "design-DNA" and brand recognition, but these two companies just feel too conservative. It's like they are stuck in their ways.

Well, it looks good, and that's kind of Porsche's "look" now.

But damn, put the new boxster on Weight Watchers or something. Was behind one the other day, that thing was massive.

^^^^ this!

Ford front ends all look the same IMO.

I think its to distinquish(sp) brand identification and its cheaper and more economical to keep the front ends relatively identical

The design works. People buy. Why change?

There's a fine line between "signature" and "samey".

The only thing I'm not a fan of is how similar the 911 rear end is to that of a Beetle.

I mean, not so long ago all Hondas looked exactly the same, all Mazdas still look exactly the same (minus the MX5, which looks uglier than the rest of the lineup). I'd actually say Porsche has a little more variety because they changed the lights on the Boxster/Cayman and made it look more different from the Panamera/Cayenne lol.

The rear end of a 911 looks like that of a Beetle?

Wut.

This right here shows how subjective looks are - I was never a fan of the old boxster, but the 981 is gorgeous in my opinion. I think it's one of the best looking cars that Porsche currently makes (or that anyone makes, for that matter, especially for just $50k...)

That beetle has a spoiler, so to get the right comparison, you need a 911 with a spoiler as well. See the similarity now?

Oh,I'm not denying how pretty they are. This one parked next to me (I park out in the boondocks of shopping centers) and my mouth was practically on the ground when I saw it. It's just wider in the back than I expected, since it's the boxster.

(Dat kia tho)

No, not really?

Unless every car with a slightly sloped plain rear bumper area "looks like a Beetle"... My gripe with the 911 is more that the front looks exactly like a Beetle lol. Though I think the 911 would be well served by some vents going through the bumper, a 90-100k car needs the extra drama.

I think the 981 looks great, but it would look better if they were a bit more petite. The big long front end makes it feel like the hood is higher and dwarfs the nice curves on the car. Also the 2.7 MT is only 2895 lb or something, if they shrunk it they could get it down to FRS curb weight or less, making it just a little more of a beast.

Go back 30 years and maybe they look similar to the very casual observer.

Okay, but I don't care for air cooled Porsches and if you're going to criticize car design for "sameness" it makes sense to talk about the most recent generation since styling changes a lot?
