Face Tattoos?
Opinions on face tattoos in the American business world. I’m an Electrician by trade. I’ve been thinking about getting one since my sister died last year in June. What does everyone else think?

An electrician for how long?
A resume that shows lots of experience may overshadow the tattoo. But if you have little to put as pass work, good luck after the interview. |

As in the famous words on our family cress: "Not in the Face!"
I'm all for tattoos as permanent art, but I'm afraid of compromise on just one. If you want to show off art or a personal message to everyone, put it on a shirt, a sweeter, vinyl stickers for your rear windows/ bumpers. Then again it's not my face nor my job cares what I look like as long as I get shit done right, no one would say jack. As for social life, if you want people to stare go for it. That's pretty much all they do. Oh and talk mad shit right after you are out of ear range.

Personally it's a hard pass for me. Most of the time they look ridiculous and definitely cuts down on future prospects in many ways. Jobs, socially, every aspect of life is changed to a degree. Tattoos in general carry a stigma no matter how right or wrong it is. Wearing one on your face is a huge step in life. Are you always going to be an electrician? What if an office job opens up somewhere? What if something happens and you have to get a new job or even career? Will your employer ALWAYS be okay with it or will that change how you're viewed in the workplace?
Tattoo acceptance has changed DRASTICALLY in the last ten years or so, but it's still not to the point where facial or even visible tattoos are always accepted. There are repercussions to every action. Having said this I know people professionally with neck tattoos and I don't think twice about it, but I know some people definitely have to warm up to them. This "diagram" of tattoo placement seems appropriate here, lol. |

I wouldn't do it.
Electrician by trade today, future business owner tomorrow. You never know what will happen down the road. You could end up in an office at some point. That said, I don't care about ink myself or where it is. |

Just get it then. You already check all the stigma boxes, can't really go much more downhill.

I mean, worst that could happen is what, homeless and unemployed? Personally, I don't care how someone chooses to express themselves as long as they're clean. But far too many people do. Try a temporary and see how it plays out?

I would say it probably ain't worth it especially if you're living in the bible belt, still too many people out there who would be a bit put off. My bud who also has a record, has a very visible neck tattoo that goes all the way up to his jaw and he definitely gets dirty looks even though such appearances are pretty accepted here in AZ.

Some points from a guy that hires people
Location - What may be perfectly acceptable in one place may mean living on the street in another. I doubt it would even be noticed in East LA but not going to go over well in Salt Lake City. Keep in mind that where you live now may not be where you spend the rest of your life. Type of electrician - You didn't say what type you are. If industrial or construction no big deal. If contractor or home repair huge deal. You don't want the little old ladies saying "don't send the scary guy with the tattoo on his face". If you ever wanted to start your own business (lots of felons do) it would be very restrictive. Attitude - Many people that get face tattoos have a "fuck the system I do what I want" attitude. There are plenty that don't as well but that is not the message it sends. One of the employment issues that you would face (no pun intended) isn't the tat it self but the stereotype it creates. Many people with face tattoos blame the tat for not getting work when in reality it is just their "screw you" attitude. The very fact you are asking the question shows you probably don't have that attitude but try to convince some HR person during an interview that you don't. People that hire - Although the day is not far away when there will be a radical change at this point many of the people that would be doing the hiring are Baby Boomers. As such the majority hate tattoos of any type much less on the face. Sure it isn't fair but that is just the way it is. I grew up around bikers and then went into the Army so I am one of the rarer baby boomers that couldn't care less about tattoos but that is not the norm with my generation. My so-in-law's brother was in a death metal band and figured it would be his career so he had his whole neck and much of his face done. When real life set in and he figured out that garage death metal bands don't make a living he had to go find a real job. It was difficult. He is a smart and ambitious guy but is stuck doing labour work. He expresses regret all the time.
