kidding aside you make great points about el vs uel that i had not known prior to your post, packaging etc.
some still want to be in the uel boxer community more than they want 10hp tho
im still oe header tho so dont shoot me, i can just see both sides.

Hey, don't get me wrong, I'm a victim of packaging.

When I went looking for boost, the package I liked best, and which fitted my power goals, was the AVO, which damn it, has an UEL header.

There were other options out there, but most had the turbo up high infront of the radiator, IMO they had a better header design, but the AVO just looks much more stealthy.

So yeah, packaging compromise

When I was NA I tried the Tomei header vs the OEM decat, that was a waste of $900AUD, the decatted OEM out performed the Tomei, everywhere.

Most importantly is don't fall into the whole UEL header and extra torque hype. The conversations and actual gains are painfull.

As always: Opinions may vary

This chart shows the stock header and differences between the v3 and v4 tune, you can see most of the mid-range bump came from that.

That’s correct

Just try an OFT first. If you have regular e85 then ecutek+ tune + flex fuel is all you need.

Agree with this. Start small then build your way up. It would be great if you had access to e85, but start with the tune to help that dip if you’re scared to go catless. While you feel out the tune, you can do other mods to help the car’s performance like lightweight wheels, good tires, lighter exhaust, a drop-in filter etc. Punching out your cat is an option, but I personally would buy a catless header and swap out to stock when emission time comes just in case they want to give you shit about it. Whatever the case may be, you’ll be safe with a completely stock header. There’s lots of options when it comes to headers so you can make your own choice on that

Thanks jflogerzi and Will_BRZ! I'm going to do just that.

My read of the state emissions regulations doesn't detail the exact form of testing that's done. But when I brought my other car (2015 Mustang GT) for its emissions inspection, they did a tailpipe test. It could just be specific to my community, but after that, I'm leery of trying to get through without a cat (and also don't want to go through the headache of swapping headers for every emissions test; the more messing with the engine, the greater the chance for something to break).

I've read a lot about the benefits of E85, but unfortunately, it's hard to find in my area.

Thanks again!

They do a tailpipe test. Mass is evil. They even rev the engine up etc, it is all awful. Plus they attach the computer to the car and are vile horrible things. It is best just to run and move somewhere without an income tax or a car inspection.

The best thing to do is find an independent mechanic that you like that does the testing and just grow a relationship. That way if they like you they will look the other way if they can, and honestly tell you when they cannot. There are lots of good people that happen to do tests. There are also lots of assholes that don't give a shit that are using broken outdated decades old equipment that want to fail you.

This is not true. There has not been tailpipe testing in MA for more than 10 years. They scan for OBD2 codes (check engine light) and that's it for emissions.

It's also not true that you can ask a buddy who has an inspection station and get a mail-order sticker. Only an idiot, or someone who doesn't care about losing his inspection license, would do that today. Mass inspection stations have something like 13 cameras scattered around the inspection bay, including at least one on the operator, recording the entire inspection process. If there's ever any question about the sticker on your car, the state goes back and pulls those records, and if fraud is determined, there goes your easy and guaranteed inspection income...

That being said, if you install a header and/or flash the tune, as long as there are 1) no codes being thrown, and 2) not a bunch of OBD log parameters turned off, they will never even bother opening the hood.

I ran a JDL Catted UEL and JDL UQ FP/OP combo pipe on 93. I made 194whp and 155ftlbs on a DynoDynamic Dyno with a custom tune.

Stock usually runs around 160-165

You can run clean, and still make good power. E85 is nice, but it's also more difficult to come by, and given you are in New England, it SUCKS in the cold. Also given this map (which isn't 100% accurate): https://afdc.energy.gov/fuels/ethano...arest?fuel=E85 there are not a whole lot of locations in NE, unless you happen to be in of the very few areas.

JDL just re-released some catted headers. I'd recommend checking them out and going from there. I never threw a code, and never had any sensors disabled.

Was the front pipe the catted one or just resonated?

even more impressive then that you gained 30 hp. Usually that's the expected gain from a fully catless setup
