If you're ambitious, got the time, and are crafty you can probably make it work for less than the price of a built shortblock. But I don't think I've seen our 86 gearbox mated to an EJ so who knows if this swap could even work and be worth the money. Also like posted ealier, the electronics would be a nightmare
If you think it won't cost you every cent of the difference (and then more) to make the EJ205 work in this platform vs a bolt on turbo kit you need to rethink this whole plan.

Any race/drift teams running EJ engines are more than likely running full standalones with partially tube framed cars so it's not nearly the same as running the same swap in a streetable car.

Add to the fact that you're gambling with a used engine that you don't know the accurate history of and it's really not a winning proposition. Sure some engines are great, but some are total junk.

PLUS, if you're in Ontario it's illegal to swap in an older engine.

I've done custom wiring on engine swaps...it can be a PITA. Also the stock turbo system on the EJ won't work on the FT86. Greddy did a EJ25 swap with custom turbo kit and they had to route the turbo system the same way their kit does to make it fit. I really don't think this would be a cost effective option. Tuning an EJ swap would obviously be easier and cheaper but I feel like the cost will just be too great and you'd basically have to get the FT86 turbo tuner kit anyways.

How would you go about this and keep the car legal? Can't swap in a older engine to the car since its illegal unless your car is going to be a track only car.

It depends where you live. Virtually everything you do to a car is illegal in California, whereas you can do just about anything you want here in florida.

You guys do realize the engine pickups are different between the two architectures? Custom subframe/cradle work going to required for, what is in my opinion, an inferior engine.

Here's a drift car

Just like the crowd who swap in 2jz, lsx, lexus v8, etc. They get those parts to play with. 1200hp Toyota GT86!

Though, I have hope in the FA20. The engine needs some higher lifting cam offerings like HKS to wake the beast up. Our aftermarket parts bin has only began building. Hell, we've finally been offered something like the OpenFlash Tablet to start full end-user tuning with.

But what I'm really hoping for is more development towards the heads.

Some HKS cams
Yea, I know others have done it, but these are race teams we're talking about. That car probably has a full dry sump system so the problem with the larger oil pan that the EJ motor has doesn't really exist I bet.

If you throw enough money at it you can put any motor you want into the FT86 chassis, but if we're talking about cost effectiveness. I think just low compression pistons in the FA20 would be the smarter choice. Plus a great example would be crawford's car. I've never heard of any Impreza making that kind of power on a stock turbo.

Ken Gushi's Greddy/Cosworth EJ25 Drift Car...

Cosworth CS600 EJ25-based powerplant
Cosworth dry sump system
GReddy TD06SH-25G turbo

Not sure if they have a custom subframe to fit the motor.

Also, did anyone talk about the Transmission for an EJ20 swap yet?

I've heard a rumor that, some shop (I'll keep it unknown) is trying to make turbo 86 AWD.
