Well, that too, but no. I tend to give money directly to where I see it's needed, and is maximized, local organizations, etc.

High School Band. My daughter played in the band and was a drum-major as well 25 years ago. Figured it was a worthy cause. My dog poops outside, but she makes me pick it up.

In 2006, the pop culture publication Radar Magazine called the lab set one of "the 10 most dangerous toys of all time, ... exclud[ing] BB guns, slingshots, throwing stars, and anything else actually intended to inflict harm", because of the radioactive material it included (it was number 2 on the list; number 1 was lawn darts). The professional journal IEEE Spectrum published a more-detailed review in 2020, discussing the kit in the context of the history of science education kits and safety concerns. It described the likely radiation exposure as "minimal, about the equivalent to a day’s UV exposure from the sun", provided that the radioactive samples were not removed from their containers, in compliance with the warnings in the kit instructions. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists published a brief article on the web, which featured Voula Saridakis, a curator at the Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago) hosting a detailed video tour of the Atomic Energy Lab components. She concluded by saying that the kit failed to sell because of its high price, and not due to any safety concerns at the time. Wiki

Always wanted to pay with one when I found out abut them in the 90's as a kid.
But I did get to play with lawn darts. Threw them as high as we could for fun. Not to dodge them just for height. Found them in my parents shed. I was 3-4. As accident prone as I was at that time, I'm surprised I didn't get hurt. |

In 5th grade I sent a kid to the hospital accidentally when I clocked him in the head with a metal horseshoe at recess. It was his fault, he bent over to pick up a horseshoe just after I let one go that was right on target. He had to get 5 stitches. I had lawn darts, but we rarely played with them. We never thought of them as dangerous though. Then again, one of my gangs' favorite pastimes was playing chicken with a bow and arrow. We used a standard longbow, a target arrow and a large circle. Arrow was shot straight up in the air by each player while everyone stood in the circle. Shooter got points for landing the arrow in the circle, and for everyone that ran out of the circle. Anyone could get bonus points for catching the arrow without it touching the ground. Person with the most points after each round won.

When I was a kid we had a nice, flat area between our house and barn, where my younger brother and I often played. One day when we were ten or eleven-ish years old, while he was riding his bike, I picked up a stone and aimlessly threw it as high as I could.
I remember my horror as I watched my little brother ride directly underneath it. I lost my words and hopelessly screamed, "Aaaaaahhh!" Nailed him right smack in the top of his head. I feel terrible about it to this day.
