i'm not sure why AWD R&D would put them over and have them throwing in the towel; seems silly to me, then again I don't engineer cars.
they would need to COMPLETELY re-engineer the engine mounting. the FT86 has the engine very far back. in order to use any of the current subaru transmissions, the engine needs to be moved in front of the front axle. so they would need to either redesign the entire front of the car, or build a new transmission & front drivetrain from scratch.

btw, I TOLD YOU SO!!! i'm pretty certain if you go and search, you will find me calling BS on AWD from the get-go.

Subie doesn't have to use Toyota's front axle area. They can built different one. It's not like they haven't done it before. Yeah, Toyota is planning to build FT86 @ the Subie's plant, but that doesn't mean Subie gotta follow same chassis was Toyota.

& don't forget, it's not official. I'm not saying Hachiroku is BS'ing. Just for me, I don't believe it til Subie said so.

right, but the cost of them completely re-engineering the front half of the car might be more than they want to spend. just sayin'...

im glad that the subaru version is RWD, even though i am a subaru fan and former owner of a 2002 WRX wagon.

the question now is of product differentiation, right? and that article says they will redesign from the A-pillar forward. how does that make sense? thats the best part of the FT-86's styling!

i would love to see the subaru version be a shooting brake/3 door hatchback for those people that like quirky hatchbacks and RWD. ichitaka05 made this chop below.

I don't want to see AWD for this car. It'll kill the whole idea for this car.....sliding. I think Subaru should use this chassis and extend it a bit to do their own AWD coupe. Let this car be it's own animal: lightweight and RWD

I stick with coupe, but people will have alternative choices if they make it exclusive for Subaru.

Looks like autoblog has picked up on this story too, apparently from reading our threads, and they've added a poll:

Right now about 75% of the people responding say "AWD would provide a distinct choice vs. the Toyota. RWD makes the Subaru a fancy rebadge."

and I would totally rock that three door hatch...
