I drove a cheap 2007 Corolla for many years. Yes it wasn't an impressive car, had quite a lot of body roll, relatively weak engine and a primitive 4-speed AT.
But it was light, so those 120 hp did not hurt as much as the number would suggest, at least at lower speeds. No nannies (not even ABS) so driving on wet was quite engaging. In the snow, I did better than drivers of much fancier cars, who apparently did not know that turning TC off helps in some circumstances. The AT was primitive, but smart enough - I could have quite a lot of control on when shifts occur just by modulating the throttle. I though body roll was really bad until I drove a small rental Chevy (Sonic I think) and it scared the shit out of me when I tried a fast lane change at 60 mph. In terms of fast response to steering inputs, I preferred that Corolla over a 2016 Mustang. One thing that completely sucked in this car were the front seats. One of the least comfortable seats ever. Later I drove a 2015 or 16 loaner Corolla and it had better seats, though still not great. And it was so dependable, over 120 kmiles I almost had no problems, ECU had to be replaced early (there was a design flaw which led to a recall), and around 110 kmiles it threw an oxygen sensor code which did not come back after reset. That's it, I think. Oh, and I did not drive it "like a Corolla". That comes from the driver, not the car. |

Yah basically anywhere on the internet. People always talk about how awful they are to drive or how they're rattle-prone penalty boxes on wheels. I didn't find any of that to be true. Quite the opposite actually.

a brand new corolla just body rolled and swerved into my lane erratically as I was driving today.
that car sucks. there's your comparison. BRZ does not suck, the corolla does. Mazda 3 regular series is so much better at handling and is thousands cheaper. |
