Also, just like Tom said, circumstances made the 1ZZ a better choice. It is/was his daily driver too, so he could not have as much down time as if he were to do a 2ZZ swap.

I also have another friend who did this swap into his liftback.
When did Toyota stop selling the 2ZZ in the US market? My Google-fu is failing me right now. It's not a big deal to most but to us it makes it unstreetable because of smog.

Looks like it's still being used by Lotus, but like you said that doesn't happen to help in the 'availability' equation.

I want to say 2006 with the Celica GTS, Corolla XRS, and Matrix XRS.

Yeah, that's why Toyota got rid of them in favor for the 2.4L for the later XRS models, because the lift made it more difficult to pass emissions.

The one and only time I drove a Yaris is for my very first ever autocross. I rented one from the local U-Car-Share specifically for the event, and the only prep I did was to remove the hubcaps (which weren't allowed) and to add a schweet racing stripe out of blue painter's tape.

It was automatic, and the shift logic on that car was atrocious, but it was so light that tossing it around the cones was actually a lot of fun.

My previous DD was a 3-door Yaris. It got totaled which let me buy my FRS sooner than later. But, I miss that little car. It was great for my frequent trips to Vegas (very roomy) and with the 5-speed, it was fun, for what it was. The best things were the cup holders (right in front of the vent outlets) and the glove boxes.

Keeping your beverage hot or cold before it was cool (or hot as it were).
They had some smart packaging in that car (mine was a 5dr)

Toyota Previews 210-HP Yaris Hot Hatch Bound For Geneva

Quote:
Toyota has been promising for some time to unleash a hot-hatch version of the Yaris. And the time will finally come at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show just a couple of months from now.

Pictured here for the first time is the forthcoming Yaris hot hatch, accompanied by one salient detail: it'll pack over 210 horsepower, putting it in prime position to dice it with the likes of the Renaultsport Clio 200 and the 189-hp Volkswagen Polo GTI.

Unlike those five-door models, though, the hot Yaris will pack three doors, and naturally feature other visual and performance upgrades. As you can see, those will include upgraded rolling stock, enhanced aero, and some splashy graphics reminiscent of the Japanese automaker's racing livery.

The hot hatch will appear on Toyota's stage at the Swiss auto expo alongside the new WRC-spec rally car that's set to debut at the Monte Carlo Rally next week.

While Toyota's European division was releasing these preliminary photos and details, its global headquarters revealed other revisions to the Vitz (as the model's known in the Japanese Domestic Market). Bearing subtle cosmetic modifications inside and out, the Vitz will now be offered with a hybrid powertrain, just like the Yaris Hybrid offered in Europe.

Just how (and why) Toyota will distinguish this model from the Aqua (Japan's version of the similarly updated Prius C), we don't know. But the 99-horsepower hybrid option will be offered in front-drive form only, joining the 1.0- and 1.3-liter conventional powertrain options that can be had with front- or all-wheel drive.

Rallying is not doing well. Attendance is way down and more manufacturers are leaving than coming in. I think cars like this are why. We all know that's not a real Yaris, but most people don't and let's be honest- a Yaris is a shit box economic and nothing to get excited about. IMHO Rallying needs Sportscars not econoboxes

Yaris fulfills its intended function very well. It is not designed to "get excited about".

Doubt it'll make it's way to the US.
