Personally, I would stay away from light weight crank pulleys and tunes that raise the rev limit. Better safe than sorry. Get your water, I mean oil changed at 5k intervals too.

FWIW I sold my factory wheels to an older gentleman the other day with a hot lava FR-S.

His card had just over 108k miles on it - he drives it daily, and he said that he had zero issues with the car. He also does autocross with it fairly regularly as that is his hobby.

Like it has been mentioned, keep up with the maintenance and I don't see why you should have any need to feel paranoid, or that it would give out before any other Toyota.

You have to remember that people do a pretty good job of abusing these cars - they're easily modified and worked on by shade tree mechanics, so don't let that skew the presence of reality.

Did the same with the 14 year old grandson last week (no pics though since the other grandson killed the phone battery chasing Pokeman) with the same results. He now has every 13 to 15 year old girl in the trailer park where the cottage is following him around though. Who says these cars don't attract females!?

Take care of the engine and it will last a long time.
A 2% rate is among the very worst brands for reliability- Audi, VW, Mitsubishi, Renault, BMW, Peugeot, Vauxhall, and SAAB all are around 2% and represent the worst engine failure rates - among the 10 worst brands- in the industry currently.

Honda is the best at 0.4 percent, Toyota second best at 0.5%, Subaru unfortunately is not in the top 10 (or the bottom 10 as listed, either)

Over what time period is the engine failure rate calculated?

Ahhh but if 80% of that 2% had been modded in some fashion that contributed to or directly caused the failure then we have a different picture. Besides it was an off the cuff guess pulled out of my ass not a real number that can be supported. If taking each overall brand as a catch all number then I suppose it would be safe to use whatever Subaru's % is as close.

NOTE: Not saying modding the engine causes failures just that there are more failures on them than stock!

Most engines with issues have been modded, had guys new to working on cars doing their own service or had people new to MTs where the risk of accidental, miss shift, over rev is greatly escalated. I have watched the blown engine threads very closely and even though many deny they ever screwed up there are certain indicators they did. Now before everybody gets pissy with me I repeat, not all the reports have such indicators attached just many of them.
Add this to the fact that we hear about and focus on the issues here which blows the whole thing out of proportion to reality and it is easy to get the perception there is a big problem when in fact there is not. I doubt the overall engines failure for these cars has exceeded 2% but of course am not privy to the numbers to prove that.

It will really be interesting to see in 5 years or so when many of these truly DD stock cars start hitting 100k+. I myself would be happy to reach 150k on this car and would be ecstatic to hit 200k. I am on full bolt ons (headerback with intake) and will get a custom tune that is conservative more then likely.

I autox occasionally but spend a lot of time on canyon roads. Based on how hot our cars run I think that be enough to cut it's life short but only time will tell. Kinda of wish I would have got an oil cooler a long time ago Your car will be the greatest case study imo.

I'm sitting just about at 100k DD and weekend warrior,i be done about 5 track sessions, 23 drift sessions, and redline every day. I'm completely stock outside of a muffler delete. Had my coil packs replaced recently. Other than that it's been 100% reliable to me. With how much I beat on my car I'm surprised my coil packs didn't go sooner. Pulled my spark plugs at 96k miles and they looked healthy to me.

And when you hit that mark, overhaul the engine and "refresh" it with new bearings, seals etc to keep going further.

Did you throw a code or anything with the coil packs? Im at 102k. Dont beat on it that hard though as I chill on my daily drives

Where do you get your stats?

Edit: Just passed 50k miles, no powertrain issues aside from CEL related to dead coilpacks replaced myself in the driveway ~$110, ~10 hours of track time (one day it pulled double duty with two drivers), almost 2 seasons of autox.

Interesting thread. I haven't read through the whole thing but I often wonder about it as well because this engine makes all kinds of weird noises:
1. crickets
2. sounds like it's going to die when I coast to a stop
3. switches between sounding like a diesel to a normal gas engine at idle
4. sometimes DI (?) clatters
5. not very smooth when accelerating

Also, It uses more oil (2/3 qt per 4k miles) than even my 140,000mile Yaris did. And lately, it's been backfiring as well, under certain throttle conditions.

Like someone early on in the thread said, I wish they had just thrown in a Toyota engine for the Scion version; a 3SGE would have been nice. They made a similar 200hp in the first gen Altezza RS200.

Meh. The noises just scream boxer and port vs direct injection but I am interested in your oil loss. I have not lost a drop in 92K miles and I push my changes to the limit. I really had not heard of any post 13s losing oil. Any idea where it is coming out? I am also clatter free and still accelerating smoothly.
