New Toyota Head Unit...Will it work?

I've got an 18 86 and have kept my eye on aftermarket head units since buying the car since the factory one is horrible. I am always extremely turned off by the bracket needed to fill in the gaps since the newer models have suede dash panels and the plastic bracket would match neither the dash nor the unit itself. Luckily, it looks like the 2020 models will have an updated head unit. Has anyone inquired on the cost/ability to fit this new unit into an older model, namely a 17+ since they have the fewest differences?

Probably gonna have to wait until someone totals one. That way the stereo can be purchased for cheap. Unfortunately (but fortunately for you) we see new models of the cars totaled pretty quickly, so you shouldn't have to wait long for a possible part-out.

It’s doable on a 2017 BRZ.

Not sure of the Toyota differences on the wire harness but you follow the same basic steps. And yes a totaled donor car is the only way to go. I was determined to get this accomplished so I ended up spending probably 3x the money due to buying some parts new.

2020 Toyota 86 Head Unit Confirmation

I have the same question. The head unit in the 2017+ Toyota 86 is terrible and it looks as if the new Toyota head unit has Android Play and Apple Car Play (which the 86 has never had). If this works with the steering wheel controls (the steering wheel appears to be the same in photographs), I would be willing to pay full price without waiting for a donor car. People that have BRZs don't understand that the rearview camera in the 86 displays in the mirror not on the head unit. I want to leave everything exactly as is, I just want Apple Car Play. If anyone has a 2020 86 and can confirm that the steering wheel looks the same and that the rearview camera display is in the rearview mirror, that would be one step closer to confirmation.

I saw in a dealer picture on line that the Hakone edition does display the backup camera in the rear view mirror.

I too am interested in the new head unit for my 2017 86, but I have opposite problem. For my base model my display is in the head unit. My mirror is not capable of the display. I want to know if the new head unit can show the image too. Anyone?
