A stethescope would easily pinpoint the source, from the video's here it sounds similar to tensioner idler noise I've heard on other subaru's and toyota's.
When I listen for the source of the sound it's definitely coming from the right side of the engine (when you still in front of the car) in the direct injection area.

Look for Whiteout-FRS's post - I don't remember where I saw it but its somewhere in the forums here

Edit: I found it, from 6/22

This is a different issue, this was about the dip in RPM during idle.

Yes. Please don't equate the idle issue to the chirping issue. I brought my car in for:
- Check engine light
- Idle issue
I did not bring it in for:
- The chirping issue, because I haven't heard it at all.

Admits? Am I being accused of something? :P
I mean, I've seen the Youtube videos of the chirping and theres is nothing remotely as noticeable in my car. I don't know, guys, but in my extremely uninformed opinion it is a separate issue.

Haha, don't mind the wording too much.
I've seen my idle dipping but can't really hear the cricketing in the cabin really.
Open the trunk and I can hear it :/

I picked up a stethoscope some time ago when I was trying to diagnose a pulley bearing issue on another car, and I took it out to the BRZ. I hunted around that side of the car until I came upon this spot with the probe:

The chirp at this point finally came into the earpieces of the stethoscope and was matched with the low-frequency tapping I had heard while touching the probe to the other metal parts in that area.
It sounds like the chirp is the result of the insulation and metal components in the DI pump area acting like a high-pass filter, so that we only hear the highest pitch of the tapping.

I am not a skilled diagnostician, so take this with a grain of salt. Maybe someone with better ears will go poke around in this specific area.

No worries there. I am averaging 600 miles per week since the car was delivered 6/1 (2300 currently) I certainly won't be jumping to conclusions on this either. However, my car starting chirping on day one, with less than a hundred miles on it (noticed when showing it off to my neighbor, James Bond who thinks it looks like a Maserati...no, I don't make this stuff up )

I'll be scrutinizing the work and the results for certain.

Did you listen to each of the pulleys, tensioner, water pump etc. ?

I checked what I could reach on the driver's side of the engine and didn't get any sounds out of it like the chirp or clack. Just the whir of bearings.

Idler pulley installed today, drove home...

Complete FAIL

No change at all, still chirping away after it warmed. I'm feeling like an idiot because I had confidence in the tech's diagnoses.

Stupid cricket sound.....

Idler pulley alone? Or the tensioner too?

Unfortunately yes ^^

I strongly suggest that we all contact our dealerships with the "concern" and request that a E-QMR is initiated (more on E-QMR in the link) This will get the ball rolling with Subaru (and maybe Scion) to get the annoyance remedied.

A brief read through: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...458#post241458 should show that these types of issues need to be brought to the attention of the dealerships right away to get the ball rolling.

Show up with your complaint skills

Someone had posted a while back on this saying the chirp/crickets are from the DI, and high pressure. I don't know anything about this, but I'm 99% sure that the chirp and the rev issues are completely seperate.

I'm also guessing since so many have the chirp that it's just an unwelcome side effect of an intended design, and not an issue that will lead to a critical failure of the car.
