One should define meanings one uses for words in post then. "Unnecessary" as in car can drive without upgrades with everything stock? Yes. Or "unnecessary" in way that no coilovers on market bring any worthy enough improvements to comfort & handling on street (which meaning i guess he really meant)? No.
Fact that he is not willing to pay coilover cost to get what they provide doesn't mean they aren't worthy purchase for others, yet he still generalizes and bashes those that don't share his views. I'd say such narrow mindedness is good target for some trolling, so i did exactly that. |

With track you more or less are dealing with fairly smooth surfaces, but with street the roads will be uneven and generally rougher. Naturally in both cases you want to improve the handling of the car. People are so used to the idea that any mods to a sports car must obviously be to improve its track capabilities, but at least in my case, I'm building a street car. Some have the opinion that the stock car is perfectly acceptable for daily driver use. That's a personal opinion. If this were true then why was the damper adjusted for better ride with the MY15's and yet again with the MY17's? Again my own opinion, but I view a good street build to include better handling than stock, smoother ride, more or less stock clearance and the ability to handle most road conditions like I were driving on a perfectly smooth race track.

I will most likely do coilovers somewhere down the line, but for the price of a quality set I would rather do other things first. The reason why I chose springs is because they're a cheap, easy way to improve handling and get rid of that nasty wheel gap.

So all those, that reported on daily ride better ride, more comfort, approval from significant other test/review on some coilovers, are liars? I can agree on cheaper bit for just spring upgrade, but have no clue where you got that high quality coilovers have nothing to improve over stock or some available "struts&springs" combos on DD car. Unless of course coilover buyer is of type like in one funny youtube vid i saw, that 1) everybody must buy coilovers & 2) everybody have to turn them to full stiff.

Good lord this thread has taken an impressive downhill spiral lol.
My BRZ runs swift springs on '13 struts, my Forester XT runs ST Coilovers. The ST Coilovers are less harsh than plenty of strut and spring combos I've ridden on. Why? They are matched appropriately. What's cheaper? Springs or coils? Springs of course. But add in struts, and there are a few, (ST, KW, FEAL,) coilovers that can be had that are better than many/most strut/spring combos. If money wasn't a factor, I'd have ST's in the BRZ, but I'm trying to make it a riot to drive as cheap as I can, so I can enjoy it's daily-ability and make my Forester the turbo-toaster rocket ship she deserves to be. The Forester has 80k daily driven miles on the coilovers and they held up great with one rebuild covered under warranty about 10k miles ago. (One strut started leaking, ST rebuilt all four complimentary to be sure they matched.) She is also autox'd a few times a year, and driven with wreckless abandon on closed courses, (local hillclimb courses.) I don't think coilovers are a bad choice for daily driving, or the everyman, but I think that low quality coilovers are often worse than stock, and definitely worse than decent strut/spring combos. People buy because they go low, or they are cheap, or they can adjust 'all teh cambarz'. Those cars, of course, ride terribly, are uncomfortable, and have suspension related reliability issues. Both setups have their place in intent for the owner, and their budget. Pick appropriately.

Hahaha it's all @choiboie 's fault for mentioning coilovers in the first place
But in all seriousness, nobody here was debating the effectiveness of coilovers. They're a great mod if you can afford them, but I can't so I went with a nice set of springs instead. And speaking of my springs, they get installed tomorrow so I'll have pictures posted soon. |
