My Eclipse is getting old and I could really use modern amenities like the keyless access/start, nav, bluetooth, HID's, backup camera, etc. But my Eclipse still gives me a sense of joy every time I see it and drive it. And I'm not rich, so if I'm going to spend 30,000 freaking dollars, I want to make sure my next car will do the same.

Yeah, I remember you saying as much before I made an account.

Shame Toyota has lost your business by choosing the wrong color red and requiring a key in an ignition lock to start the car.

Don't worry. Either Toyota (Scion) or Subaru will get my business eventually. I just have to work out the details and the timing.

If I were a carjacker, I think I'd love keyless entry.

You know there is only one thing to do; start the '17 speculation now. Twin-turbo, AWD, removable hardtop, no armrest.

If so, it will be very popular in Texas. I could see a more or less equal number of Hot Lavas and Maroons selling in the same year here.

So don't spend $30K. Buy a gently used one for $18-22K.

Sure it is. The best strategy is to go to a credit union (you ARE a member of one, right?) and secure a loan for a used car at a reasonable interest rate. Then, when you go to the dealership, say nothing about the one in your pocket until the entire deal is settled. Haggle for the lowest price that you can. (No "pure process" price fixing involved on a used 86.)

THEN, and only then, when they come back to you with a finance plan featuring a high interest rate, spring the CU loan on them and ask them to beat the interest rate. Maybe they will, maybe they won't. If not, you can just go with the CU rate. I am willing to be that they will come back with a better interest rate, if you have good credit.

This strategy works well if you have solid credit and are over 25 years old. Apologies to the younger list members...

Car dealerships can make money from the customer in three ways: selling the car at a high price, giving a lowball trade-in value if you have a trade, and charging a higher rate for the car loan. Used car prices are typically inflated precisely because the dealer expects to haggle on that with the customer. Keep in mind, though, that the car salesman has to make a living and he can't if there is no profit in the sale. So be fair.

And always remember that your most powerful weapons as a customer are your two feet. You must be willing to walk if the deal is not what you want. Don't worry, there will be another great deal a little later, possibly at another dealership.

Just my 2 cents worth.
