Sleepy Piston's road & track 86 (Swedish time attack)

Hi everyone! I've been reading this forum like a bible over the last year and I'm thinking it's time to share a bit of myself. Hopefully someone will one day learn something from this thread, as I have learnt from others!



Here goes:

My name is Joel, I'm 27 and been doing quite alot of track days for the last 5 years. Learned to drive in an Alfa Romeo and an Alfa was the first car I brought to a track. Been running some e36s and a 1-series too. My 86 is a more track oriented build though, and my vision is to have sort of a hybrid car that can be competative on the track yet street legal (which means no turbo in Sweden, sadly).

I got the car in the end of 2015 and competed in the Swedish time attack series club-class in 2016 with just minor mods. This was the most fun I've ever had and I'm signed up for this year aswell. This series is actually filmed and on TV in 8 episodes (also streamable in all nordic countries). In case you're interested:

A quick summary of last year's season:

Mods (just performance wise):
- BC racing BR coilovers 8/8kg springs
- Tomei EL header and front pipe
- ISR titanium axleback
- Mishimoto CAI
- Mishimoto oil cooler w. thermostat
- Crawford performance intake billets
- Ecutek tune
- Yellowstuff pads
- Sparco EVO/Rev seats

Tires:
- Kumho ku36 18" 225
- Yokohama AD08R 18" 235
It was the general consensus at the end of the season that you needed ad08r to be competative. We are limited to TW180 and some tiers (like Michelin cups and federal 595 rs-r are also forbidden)

I finished a total fifth in the series and took 2 3rd places in two seperate events!



Moving on, a few weeks after the final race, just before winter I got the horrifying DI seal issue. It sounded like an AK47 going off under the hood but the car never threw a code. The car was still under warranty and toyota decided to fix it, however they could not take my word for what the problem was. A few week later I went over to pick up the car. Didn't even get out of their parking lot before I heard it again. They had changed the fuel pump as that was the only TSB they ahd found in concern to mysterious noises. They agreed to follow my recommendation after this (which would have been non existant if it were'nt for this forum!) and they replaced the seals and also removed the intake billets upon my request.
After running about 400km and shifting down, it came back again and man was I pissed. Put the car in the garage and stripped it apart and pulled out the injectors my self.



It was quite apparant that the toyota tech had'nt done his job properly. I ordered the special tool and some seals myself and also convinced toyota to send me 3 brand new injectors under warranty as the tech had clearly scratched the seal surface while removing the old seals. Yhey had'nt even used the special tool for new seals either! I settled down when they agreed to send me the three new injectors though. They are 500$ a piece otherwise...

While waiting for the new injectors I took the decision to go all in for this years season and order some more nice bits to bring the car from a standard cool looking car, to something a bit more performance oriented.

- Delicious tuning flexi fuel kit with sensor and race tune. Not only will this give me another 20hp or so it'll also help the DI seal issue by bringing down maximum combustion temperature.





- Öhlins R&T coilovers w. Velox adjustable top mounts. Yes, the new kit with the ridiciously low spring rates (4/3kg). However, I live close to Öhlins and these were developed on one of our local tracks. They have brilliant support and have allready ordered different springs for me to test out!! I will keep you posted about these as I've not seen anyone running them!





- Whiteline insert bushings: Differential, rear subframe and gearbox (together with the energy supsension shifter mount). The whine in 1st and 2nd gear is crazy now. Sounds like I've got straight cut gears Also there is a slight "clonk" while pressing the clutch now. I'm hoping it's got something to do with the stiffer drive line aswell as it would be strange if the throw out bearing cracked during the winter in the garage...

- Brakes... I know EBC is cheap and thats why I used them. I ate through one set of front pads last year per race. They were only 70$ though But after testing some pre owned p-Mu the difference was quite apparent. Many were running PFC11's and they seem to be working very well with our tires. I'll probably run something equivalent to them. I ordered the porsche cooling ducts aswell as I want to keep the fog lights.



I also got very lucky and found a AP racing bbk, slightly used from the UK. All the numbers on the callipers and so on matches up with this kit: https://www.essexparts.com/ap-racing...fourpiston-332

Cool to see another track-focused build from Europe.

A friend of mine has the same Öhlins R&T kit, i liked it a lot on track but he still has to do some more adjustment(he's getting Raceseng top mounts and SPL lca's mounted next month). I look forward to your impressions when you get those new springs from Öhlins, i know he will appreciate the info

Nice to hear! Compared to the BCs I previously ran, the damper settings are really soft. Running them on the hardest on a stone laid road is more comfortable than the oem suspension on perfect asphalt^^ Öhlins are saying that they are working with the chassis and not just making everything stiffer.

Yesterday I ordered the trackspec louvers and the SARD LSR wing Cant wait to get them now!

I was ready to tell you that the BC is not the best decision, but then I saw that you changed to Öhlins. I had a discussion last year to install the same kit. In Germany this can be done only in the Öhlins center they have in Nürburgring. I haven't done it yet, because there is minimal information about this kit. Keep us posted.

hehe the BCs are actually allright if you wanna have a stiffer, cooler looking car. I think they are far superior to D2, K-sport and all the other cheaper Taiwan brands. It will be great to feel the difference with the real deal though! I should be able to cut seconds with them actually

I installed mine myself. A bit more work to it than regular coilovers but its an easy job in the end=)

You are lucky. Here the issue is with the TUV certification. They can approve them for public usage only in the Ohlins center.

I thought only the part had to be TUV approved. Guess I was wrong!

Yesterday my buddy took the car from the garage and drove 250km to me. My DI seals have now lasted longer than when Toyota changed them😂


On the way he picked up a beautiful package from an English gentleman. Have a look at these😍😍😍





Things to do next week:
- mount the new brakes
- retighten all bolts for the front coilovers as something is clonking
- corner weight and wheel adjustment is booked for Friday!

Sooo... The car has now been driven 600km and the DI seals are still holding! That makes me at least 50% better than the Toyota tech who changed them the last time😂

Anyhow the new brakes are on! I'll give some feedback on them tomorrow when I've tested them!

All bolts have been tightened and the clunk-noise while pressing the clutch has been deemed normal. I met a guy today who have the same whiteline bushing and his car has the same noise!

Also, I went with a buddy 800km and picked up a spare engine! It's been deemed out because of silver flakes in the oil, but I sort of only paid for the coils Atleast now I got a lot of spares and if my engine doesn't brake this year, I'll start building this one next winter

If I had a spare engine, I would increase the capacity with boring the cylinders. Toda Racing has a 2300 kit, but you have to ship the cylinder block to them. http://www.toda-racing.co.jp/en/prod...hi2300kit.html

I have seen a few 2,3L stroker kits around That would be awesome as hell!

Well, to keep it road legal in Sweden yes. However lots of people dismount turbos before doing the annual MOT. Quite a lot of work though. With a supercharger you just need to remove the belt so that it is not in use

Also, for next year I will probably go up a class in the time attack series where FI would be allowed.

Anyone for a 2,3L supercharged FA20?🙄

You mentioned PFC 11's being used in other cars. Are those BRZ's?
Is this recent?


I have been trying to get rears for my car but PFC says they are not making them anymore.

Yeah mostly other cars but a GT86 ran them last year but he seem to have issues with them this year so your info is probably correct. I'm going winmax W6.5 this year.

Damn it looks nice now. I put on last years AD08R's and they have at least another track day in them. Car feels a lot stiffer too!

Can't wait to get my SARD wing and TRD spoiler next week and put on the trackspec louvers! Gonna look dope!😁

I was yes. They are crap compared to other ones. They have very inconsistent feel and they wear down very fast. I used a new set per 1.5 track day or so. Compared to project mu ns400 that I tried at the end of the season the yellow stuff are crap. Also they will not be yellow for long as the paint on them burns up pretty quickly making them look like crap. I would not recommend them, but I have several friends who uses them on their bmws and they seem pretty happy with them.
