vs. MX-5/S2000 Supercharged
Hey guys,
I was just thinking, since I would eventually like to supercharge a BRZ when a kit is available (I believe HKS is developing one), what if I could get a great used roadster with low mileage that I could get great power from for about the price of a new BRZ? I started looking at options like these: 2006 S2000 with 20k miles: ~$23,000 Add Vortech supercharger kit: ~$4,000 not including installation/tuning Originally 237bhp, 162lb/ft, 2855lbs. After supercharger: ~358bhp, 219lb/ft, call it 2900lbs. 2008 MX-5 Miata GT (pre-facelift) w/ leather, nav, 20k miles: ~$23,000 Add Flyin' Miata supercharger kit: ~$4,600 not including installation/tuning Originally 166bhp, 140lb/ft, 2500lbs After supercharger: ~280bhp, 240lb/ft, call it 2550lbs So roughly $28,000 for an S2000 with 360hp or a Miata with 280hp and very low miles, with a removable roof but no backseat, vs let's say $28,000 and another $5k for a supercharger kit for the BRZ. Discuss!

Having driven boosted S2000s I would use comptech. the. Vortech does make more power and for drag racing is hands down the better SC, I think for Ye S its too much power and the 300-320hp with the more linear delivery of the Comptech would better suite the chassis.
While I appreciate miatas for what they are I have never really cared for it. The are awesome at the track and amazing little cars but they just have never really appealed to me that much A boosted FRS/BRZ would be cool and would be my first choice today, having a family and very limited time to track or auto cross means the trunk and back seat are a requirement so I would say boosted FRS would be first pic then the S2K then the miata. If I was single, the kids were older, or looking for a weekend toy I would probably lean more towards the S2K, and the FRS would be my second choice. I may be a little biased because I owned and an S and drove many over the last 8years, having never driven the FRS my opinion could change, but the miata will always be at the bottom of the list of those three, at least to me.

You really can't do this comparison yet. It's a new car so it's always gonna come out more than a used, but we have no idea what supercharger kits if any at all will be available or what the motor can handle. But if it was my money, i'd get the s2000k with a comptech supercharger, and I'm still very tempted too. I plan on seeing how the aftermarket develops for this car though. Just because I hate convertibles.

i would imagine the miata would be the most fun. the s2k would be the fastest. the frs would be the newest. i am a little worried about its potential since high cr, di, and budget minded dont seem to be the template for high potential

Well, Mugen and Spoon make some attractive hardtops for it if you can shell out the $$. I would kill to have either an Amuse or Spoon-kitted S2000:
