Would that be British as in unimaginative, short sighted and conceited?

Happy Monday, RT'ers! As promised, I finally got to the Cleveland Auto show and got to enjoy driving not only the Fiat 124 Spyder, but also the Abarth (which apparently is pronounced "abart" in Italy). Unfortunately, both cars were automatic.

My impressions: The 124 is a fun car to drive, decent acceleration (1.4L turbo, 160 hp), feels about the same as the FR-S. Handling feels planted, as you would expect out of the Miata platform. Didn't have much time in the car, but the interior felt nice, everything was placed with common sense in mind, easy to hop in and get started. Only issue I had was with the seats. While I was able to get it adjusted to comfort (5-way adjustable), it didn't feel quite as secure as our seats. The seats arent as bolstered, so that makes sense. Due to the weather, I couldn't drive with the top down (too cold), but the driver escort let me do the top up and down at the end of the drive. Very easy, one-handed manual operation, much easier than what I have been used to with manual tops. For what it is, in the segment its in, I'd give it a 9/10.

The Abarth: More of a non-traditional layout, so it took a second to figure out. Handles exactly as you would expect out of a lightweight, short-wheelbase car. Acceleration actually felt more peppy than the 124, although that may have been due to the fact that I found the "sport" button in the Abarth (not sure if the 124 has one, but likely it does). Because of the turbo, a very satisfying "pop" of the exhaust happens during shifts under hard acceleration. Still, the interior felt cheaper, but not to a point that it was a total turn-off for the car. Overall rating for its segment would be 8/10.

You'd like the Mini S then (for the popping anyway).

My biggest gripe with both the Miata and the 124 are the price points. I love the ND, and if I wasn't more or less set in stone on getting a 4 or 5 door for my next car, I'd be heavily considering one. But then I come back to the price, which is a hefty $38k msrp for the mid tier Miata and $35k for the mid tier 124. That kind of money can buy a lot of car, especially when it comes down to at least $35k for a car I'd have to compromise on a lot for.

That's E60 M5 money, which is a car I've lusted for for years and is actually obtainable for me now.

IIRC Miata was never a cheap car to begin with. When I went to the autoshow one time in the late 90's a new NB Miata showing on the floor was priced at $33K MSRP and I was pretty sure it wasn't the top model. The S2000 was $48k MSRP at launch.
