I've read these snorkel mods mess with the AFR, any truth to that?

I think Shiv runs the modified snorkel on their shop car, and I don't think he had to rescale the MAF voltage.

I thought Shivs snorkel was an expanded stock snorkel and not a trimmed one, but I could be wrong. That's probably the direction I would go if I do the mod.

I'm sure changes are minimal anyways.

The real gain would be less heat soak and more response, especially at lower speeds. Most of what people "feel" as power is just better response that they attribute to power. You really aren't going to feel 1-5hp. Tq, on the other hand, is a different story.

We've got some real answers!

We saw repeatable gains in top end with modified snorkel:

2-3whp, 1-2wftlbs, nearly no change in AFRs (except a small one down low)

Here's where we cut ours:

I believe Shiv's is similar to this, but then heated up and expanded with a pop (soda) bottle.

TONS more info in our post about stock airbox testing: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56341

Any concerns with heavy rain? Been driving in some pretty heavy downpour lately. Interested in this mod but would hate for any water to get in engine for 2 HP

I haven't taken off my bumper cover, but from the pictures, It looks like If water can get in the modified tube, it will have gotten into the stock tube. In both cases the tube is above the crash bar, and above the radiator ducting.

How does a modified snorkel increase throttle response at lower speeds?

Measured gains for a "free" mod is always cool

I wonder how the snorkel mod effects other intakes.

I have a TRD intake so this might have even MORE benefit for me.

First thing I did was swiss cheese the plastic blocker plate thingy a bit more.

Then I used an exacto knife and scissors to modify my snorkel. I also used a spread clamp and heat gun to spread the intake out a bit more for a more rounded shape.

I decided to keep both mounting points installed and turned half of the "tube" into a bit of an airflow blocker/director so it should send air to the intake even better

The TRD is a LOT louder now, but its the kind of loud that only gets loud when you step on it which is what I wanted Haven't done any high speed testing yet to see if it helps.

favorite idea so far

good point on heat soak.

Stock tables Intake Air Temps above 86F starts to pull timing from map, above 120F its pulling maybe 1.5 to 2 degrees, this will effect performance.

If you can keep your IAT lower its better , however is generally only a problem in traffic or low speed, or maybe for boosted guys with a turbo near intake tract. Once your around 60kMH IAT recover to close to ambient on stock car.

So what, so far, is the best DIY mod (which gives better response, but not cause negative effect on other params).
Lets try build something simple and BEST.
