I have owned both they are very different cars. The FR-S is more direct in terms of driving engagement and steering feel. The 14 WRX has a lot more power, AWD, a lot more functionality, but the suspension is soft from the factory and it has less steering feel. With the FR-S you really sit into the car and feel like you are connected to the road. But the cost of that is a stiff ride and you will feel imperfections in the street, so this is good and both bad

The WRX, you sit up much higher and the car absorbs imperfections very well, but it can sometimes be a little floaty.

Thay said, with a few inexpensive mods on the WRX (lowering springs, sway bars) you can really improve the handling/suspension.

Interior and amenities on both cars are about equal and neither are that great in terms of overall fit and finish.

If you haul friends around alot the FR-S backseat is pretty useless for even kids. So think about that.

I would tell you to also test drive a MKVII GTI, and a Focus ST and a Fiesta ST and then decide between all these cars. The new GTI's are actually very quick, get good gas mileage, and have a very nice interior. Try to find one that has the performance package (more power, LSD, and better brakes). Focus ST is a good balance between a GTI and an FR-S. Lot of car for the money.

You also need to check on insurance. Some of these cars could be much more expensive to insure than others based on your age.

Never driven a WRX, so this is FRS opinion only...

I've had mine from new for 3 years. Love it.
But I think a tune + headers on this car is a must. It kills the torque dip and has made mine awesome. The lack of the dip right where you need it really makes a DD etc so much nicer! (I have a few other bits too, but still NA).

Use it daily. Do long trips, short blasts, weekend fun, shopping, you name it. I love it.

Would love to go FI later on, and looking at an upgrade of the brakes (depending on cash!) super easy to mod this car

I would get the WRX and this is coming from a FRS owner. I think the WRX would fit your bill better in terms of mods. It's a lot cheaper to mod a WRX to go faster in a straight line than it is with a FRS. WRX is a lot more practical and when you're in college you're going to need to lug around beer/girls/laundry. However, one thing the WRX lacks compared to the FRS is in the handling department but that can be remedied as well on the WRX.

You're still not going to get anywhere close to the handling capabilities that the FR-S has. The WRX is still a bigger and heavier car. He wants more driving feel and the FR-S is great option for it.

I totally forgot I posted this! I am now the proud owner of an FRS! I've owned it for 2 weeks so far! Almost done with the break in, I've waited to patiently! I'm at 950 miles, if anyone wants pictures let me know. Still not so sure on how to post em but I will try!

Click the Attachments button (looks like a paperclip), click "Choose File" on any slot, click "Upload," and close the window. Click the Attachments button again, select your image from the drop-down menu, and it will appear on your post.
