Knowing that date is important. Get an idea whether they have a waitlist if that didn't already come out of the convo.

Now the critical piece is to repeat this process on the lock-in date and have a salesman do a search for the spec you're looking for. If you get someone cool that will do this and you're lucky, you'll get a few dealer names. If these dealers didn't already have someone waiting for an allocation and they aren't an unreasonable marker-upper, you're done. I've run into a few guys that were quick to offer to look for me over the course of the past year. When I decided to do multiple deposits, I called them.

Waiting on a dealer for an allocation is a lottery with no guarantee of ever hitting. Even when you get lucky and have a salesman+sales manager that will actually work for you every 2 weeks to try and get an allocation (few dealers will swap an 86 allocation) you're still looking at a bleak situation.
So much prep work so you can give someone $30k. Here's an idea: If you want my $30k make a product I want and offer to sell it to me. I'm not gonna make a hobby out of trying to source toys. Too many other toys available.

Good concept, but isn't going to improve soon. GM has already announced some of their popular truck configurations like the Trail Boss and the ZR2 are a going to be at 5% to 20% constraints for 2013 (meaning they will only have available that percentage of planned allocations) due to issues outside of supply chain (labor issues is the ongoing theory).

Basically, it seems every OEM is having an issue of either supply chain, labor, shipping or a combination platter of all things.

That's it. If you want it and you are unlucky like me this is what it will take.

After almost 8 months of waiting, the dealer called and I have an allocation with a VIN #. Not my first choice of colors, but at this point I am desperate. Pavement Grey Premium MT should be here sometime in October. I am in Western Massachusetts.

I placed a deposit on Oct 2021 for a Base Halo White MT. Got a call and email from Longo yesterday. No exact ETA yet, but hopefully should be here some time in October.

Lucky enough to find a dealer in PA with no markups after speaking with their head of internet sales. However the trade-off is that they won't know the ETA after placing the order after a deposit, there are currently two other orders in front of me that they are waiting to have be fulfilled.

This is the same case with the GR corolla once they start accepting deposits for them as well as the supra.

If you're near the Philly area let me know and I can PM you the dealer network name.

I'm out west and have a few deposits down, but thanks a lot! I've found MSRP dealers to be surprisingly common. Unfortunately they tend to be lower volume dealers. Even some higher volume dealers see very few 86's so watch out for that.

I sat with one of the highest volume dealers within 100mi of me (my local dealer, funny enough) for 7 months and they got diddly squat before breaking the news to me that they weren't going to be able to honor our original agreement of MSRP if they did get my spec. They didn't have a clue that the GR86 was going to get so hot when I put down my deposit and the first one they got (one of several base autos) they marked up steeply in February. I didn't realize this until much later.

6 weeks after we parted ways they finally got their first premium MT.. luckily it wasn't a color I'd have taken. It was on their site for $40k

Both. I put a deposit on a 2022, now getting a 2023 next month.

I placed my deposit Aug13 at a small dealer(town pop. 50k). 2023 Neptune Blue Premium MT.

My local and only Toyota dealer in a city of 400k would do "only" a 2500 mark up minimum. That is with a trade-in.

Im prepared to wait ~6 months. If nothing bites I might just try to grab a Golf R at msrp.

One could do a lot worse than a Golf R, very cool car. But why did VW have to cheap out the interior on the Mk 8 models so much, really annoying. Sometimes I think I should try to get a base S GTI with manual for a little over $30k, but the drab interior just pisses me off. We have a 2017 Golf TSI and the interior looks like it’s from an Audi A8 compared to today’s GTIs.

You're more optimistic than me. I ordered a 2022 and expect this thread to go through 2024.

At this rate I'll be lucky to get a car before they end production lol. Maybe by the time I get a car, all the issues will be resolved.

I used to have the same logic (never buy a first year model etc) but new problems seem to crop up with newer production models anyway. Suppliers can make a bad batch of parts 5 years into production just as they can during the first year. I think that it's as much 'luck of the draw' as anything else.
