Dimensionally the LSx series engines (block, heads, basically the actual engine) are all identical in size. The differences arise in regard to dimensional fitment due to variances in the intake manifolds and accessory placement (alternator, style of water pump used, AC compressor). The LS1 for instance has an intake manifold with minor but significant differences in design that change fitment clearances compared to the LS3. The truck intakes have obvious dimensional and design differences. All of them will fit but it's just a matter of final placement. The engine bays in the 86 are giant to say the least thanks to the enormously wide FA20.

The transmissions don't really matter as far as which variant of Tremec T56 series that is used. There are however, pros and cons to the different variants so for instance the Magnum XL that was mentioned is no different from any of the other Magnums other than it is XL (extra long). What this does is just houses the extended shifter placement internally resulting in a slightly better shifter feel than a standard Magnum using external shifter linkages to relocate the shifter. Any of them can be adapted to change shifter placement but the Magnum XL just happens to get the shifter to the OEM provision without using shifter extenders. This is also assuming your mounts have the engine placed appropriately for the XL. Vorshlag has designed their mounts to best work with the XL but not a requirement whereas Weapons Grade uses a standard T56 non magnum variant.

Just got back to the states and saw an AE86 on my last day in London. No new twins that I saw over there, though.

The thing i missed most on my trip was by far my car. So happy to see her tomorrow.
@AZFA20 I'll need to stop by your place whenever you have time to put my headers on.

The ECU is ALWAYS correcting timing based on learned knock values and active knock values which depending on the amount of correction could potentially be felt physically (it would have to be pretty significant). I don't know what all is done to your car but if stock it should be practically negligible. So much so that mixing fuels is more a waste of time and money IF it's in relatively in stock form.

"Responsiveness" can be the sensation when timing is advanced so I guess the question is again, how are you monitoring knock? If you are, the answer will be right there in the numbers. All you have to do is see what corrections if any are occurring between your fueling and driving scenarios.

If you are not actually monitoring knock values then you physically knowing it's happening is practically impossible unless it's severe knock. In that case something else is wrong. The ECUs of today are way too fast at correcting such issues that even the most acute of listeners and seat of the pants observers would not be able to tell it's happening.
Mainly relying on sound for knocking and for performance the response I feel both with how little pressure is needed to apply to the gas peddle to keep it at a constant speed, both at the lower end of gears (2.2kish) and higher end (7) and then how the car reacts when demanding some speed pick up on both fuels. But true without a knock monitor its probably negligible. Im running 95 mainly for the peace of mind factor but I was interested in seeing if there where actual visible gains.
