Thanks! I did a test with the 4949 and it seemed to pull off without too much trouble. I never did get a 4947F sample from our rep... Unfortunately the 4947F only came in 1/2" wide at the narrowest, whereas the 4949 is 1/4" and 45mil thick, just a little firmer foam. There may be a slightly different adhesive formula, but this thing is so light it's not that critical.

Vendor account is active! Thanks @Hachiroku!

I will have a group buy thread up very soon. Thanks for all the support guys, if this item sells well I will work on other projects that can make the 86 just a little bit better.

In the mean time, I will see what I can do about the tab mounted version some have requested.

I am trying to source an OEM connector to pre-make the wire below, but as-is, no. I'm reusing the OEM connector and wire from the OEM light, but adding a connector with screw terminals where the tabs are (see pic 1 below). The OEM wire harness remains untouched.

The short wire can easily be removed from the original spaceship light (it pops apart, the wires are connected with push tabs). Cut an inch or two from the tabs, and strip about 5mm of the wire, tighten screws and done (see pic 2). I kept the leftover pieces with the tabs and just taped them to the OEM light incase I need to splice them back together.

Ideally I like the light up the top but as a simple compromise, can anyone see a problem with taking the LED-array
and its diffuser out of the housing and just putting it at the base?
I tried just laying it to one side of the housing and it is under half the height and 3inches/75mm closer to the glass making the view
out the back much better. It can actually be pushed in the crack for a simple friction fit.
Possibly a section could be cut out of the shelf to lower it more.
I tucked a bit of black felt under and up over the back and over the top and meeting the glass to stop reflection in the glass
and it will not rub or rattle. It looks neat and would match black felt covering the holes left in the shelf.

The wiring was not long enough for me to try driving around in that temporary position but it would reach if centred.

Any comments before I detach the three-legged monster?

Further thoughts ..... I will not know until I get the shelf out, but it may be possible to make only two slits in the shelf and push the bit between down to make a cavity for the array and make it flush with the shelf and simply lay one bit of felt over the shelf and light. Also, a magnet may be able to be attached below the array and use it to clamp to the metal. Then it would be easy to get it out for window cleaning. I'm getting excited.

Anything is possible, the only problems I foresee are visibility and rattling. If the plastic is touching the glass it could mar, or rattle. If the LED array is RIGHT at the bottom of the glass, the trunk edge or spoiler might hide it from certain low angles (driving over a crest, for example).
