Cleaning seat belts

Has anyone found an effective method or product to clean lighter colored seat belts? The 10 Series comes with silver seat belts and I'd like to clean them up a bit. Unfortunately, they show dirt more easily.

Easiest way to clean for me is to replace them when they old. This way I don’t have to deal with the lack of retract or the little coil spring at end.

On my black seat belts I use a light vinegar with water mix. A neighbor of mine uses like hydrogen peroxide or something like that. If they sticky or gunky, use warm to hot water. Makes the gunk slide of easier. I also use a vacuum to soak up excess water.

Don’t use armor all wipes. They can discolorate the seat belt. I learned that a long time ago.


Ahh neighbor uses dawn. The original one, then hydrogen peroxide. Idk why but that’s his way.

Portable steam cleaners work well. Ones that have a hose attached like this one

Make sure after you steam the belts to leave them retracted to air dry so mold wont form

How about some warm soapy water. Then wipe dry.

I have tried using that method, soaking as much of the extended belt that would fit into a bucket of warm soapy water, with mixed results. I think they did look better, but still not as clean as I had wished.

Well, OK, plan B would depend on what soiled them?

Do you have small children? Candy, melted ice cream, chocolate, baby formula, French fry/chicken nugget grease, or partially digested combination of all of the above??

I have only owned the 10 Series with silver seat belts since August 2018. Mainly it's the driver's seat belt that exhibits the dirt or grime. Probably from just handling the belt over time. Light colored belts would be more susceptible to this problem.

I bought my car used, so they already were discolored, but then I caused a coffee stain myself and thought that was the end of my stain-cleaning abilities. But then I invested in this was able to get them looking shiny new: https://www.chemicalguys.com/foaming...ric-clean.html

It's a concentrated shampoo. You dilute it, apply a little, and scrub with a soft brush. Then vacuum out the dirt and excess shapmoo. Let dry and your seat belt will look brand new! You can use it on the carpets and seats too, though I haven't tested it on those quite yet. I can provide some before/after pics since I only did the drivers side. Passenger's is still dirty. lol.

And just for the record, I use chemical guys' products for most of my detailing. I use Meguiar's for car wash soap and quick shine since I burn through those quickly. Everything else is Chemical Guys.
