Question Toyota's Automatic sequential shift

Hi all! my knowledge of engines and things in the car are limited, but however I love driving them!

Anyways to my question! I was driving in my parent's BMW 120D the other day I put it on sequential shift to see what its like. I've noticed not sure if it happens to all or most sequential shift cars. When you floor the car the rev meter changes gears automatically just before it hits the redline without me switching gears manually. If its only some cars that automatically shift gears on sequential shift. I was wondering if anyone knows if the FRS/86/BRZ will be the same as to what I have experienced in my parent's BMW?

Thanks! ^^

No, it depends on how they program the tranny. this car doesnt have auto upshift.

And in manual mode it'll let you bounce off the rev limiter all day without slapping your hand by upshifting for you.

Probably would depend if it's in sport mode or not. My bet is, normally, it'll shift up near the limit, In sport mode, will hold revs till you tell it.

i dont know how much drifting is going to be done with atuomatics regardless of its ability to provide a linear, direct relationship between engine and tires. if drifting is what you are into, you should probably just learn to drive stick

Same as that in Lexus cars such as the IS350.

The IS250 and 350 don't have a manual mode like the IS F has, or the BRZ/86/GT86/FR-S will have. The ISx50 is simply a gear limiter, so yes technically if you have it set to 3, it will bounce off rev limit until you let it go to 4, however it will still fully automatically control the transmission below that, shifting into 1, 2 and 3rd gear as it pleases. Only the IS F has full manual mode which will actually select the gear, instead of just limiting the top gear.

If the 86 was anything like the ISx50, it wouldn't be worth using the paddle shifters, they're essentially useless.

to be honest the ISF 8spd tranny is awesome, so the fact that they say it is the same one minus 2 gears makes me happy, so when everyone goes to meets and someone asks if it is auto or manual no one will realy care.

Besides the Sport and Snow mode, isn't there an actual "Manual" mode? When you put the mode into "M" instead of D. I always thought that you can activate sports mode while in D which will have a "sporty" feel. Then there's the "Manual" mode that won't auto upshift.

sport mode is independent of D or M, and nobody knows exactly what it does just yet. in the test drive reports, they mention all sorts of things including faster shifts, TC lock up, and even throttle map changes but imo that doesnt sound right.

Two points.

First point. This is a cammed automatic GTO with a 3000 stall.
[u2b]bmQ1WnRUWHA[/u2b]

Second point.
This trans is based on the IS-F trans and tune. The way that works is it locks the convertor once you get moving. It is a fixed connection. You're not going to get that godawful soft automatic converter float.
