BTW, what might be cause for some slight gear grinding sound somewhere from transmission direction whenever car hops/is shaken going over bad roads/bumps? (no matter if in gear or not and what state clutch)? Mounts? Or some gearbox bearings?

How much did you end up paying for another transmission vs how much should I expect to pay for input or mid-shaft bearing replacement? I know the part is only about 100 dollars.

I'll have to refer you to @Ultramaroon for that question …….. he's the expert on tearing up ….. errrrr ….. I mean repairing transmissions in these cars......

I reckon if it were me, I would buy a new transmission, clutch, pressure plate and TOB and have those parts installed by a transmission shop.

Oh, Bubba just spoke up and said he would get another transmission, clutch & pressure plate out of a wrecking yard install them along with a new TOB …….

Bah! I still haven't opened mine. I'll get there eventually. OP's video clip doesn't sound horrible but the real sign is in how much noise it makes under torque. I've been driving with my beater second transmission for about a year now and as bad as it immediately sounded to me, it hasn't gotten any worse.

I'll post a clip of mine for comparison this week. Driving home from NorCal tomorrow morning.

Whoops definitely meant to reply to @Ultramaroon, @humfrz lol, was rushing cuz work. But thank you both for the replies, will see what happens in the next couple weeks on my next dealer trip. Best case, warranty happens and stuff gets replaced. regardless which part's bad, probably gonna just shell out the dough to replace the other part while they have the tranny dropped. Preventative measures can't hurt if i'm gonna drive like its meant to be driven, plus power mods and tune in future.

Well, jfarkas, I reckon you found out the MT in the twins is not a Muncie (M22) transmission that could be found in your father's racing cars.

However, my contention is that if you "treat er right", the MT in the twins will serve it's purpose.

mine is year 13 with 23K mileage only and have same sound as OP. i heard our TOB is spinning even clutch is not engaged so i am not sure this is normal or not. hope others can test theirs and post here with year + mileage to see.

i am also thinking it is Input shaft spinning in the transmission as some others are saying though.
everything works perfectly so

if it is indeed TOB, then i will just upgrade my clutch with new TOB While it's there.

Check out my reply on this other post from earlier http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...=128124&page=3

TL;DR, went to dealership for HPFP replacement as well as similar noise. They concluded its just gear rollover/regular old tranny noise. 86's have little in the way of noise insulation so you hear more weird noises than in regular cars. Your experience may vary though, as i'm no expert; just relaying on what the Toyota tech relayed to me.

My 2013 FR-S (MT) has about 20,000 miles on it.

I don't hear any gear rollover or TOB sounds or any other unusual sounds coming from the clutch/transmission.

Now, since I don't hear and transmission sounds, one or more of the following could be working here:

* since I'm half deaf, maybe I'm just not hearing any sounds.

* maybe the clutch and transmission in my car is just very quiet.

* maybe it's making sounds and I just figure that's the way it is supposed to be.

I think it was ol @Tcoat that was into heavy metal band concerts.

I was into "heavy metal" of a different kind ……. maybe even louder ……
