Nah, this isn't surprising. Mazda has been focused on its lightweight stuff for a few years, but they've always promised one they become happy with their 2nd gen skyactiv, they were going to be coming back with everything else that we love them for.

My guess is that they want to use skyactiv-x for a performance engine, and because of how finicky skyactiv-x is, an inline 6 design based on the inline 4 would be a safer bet to pour resources into than turbo-4 or a V6.

Mazda cars already have a longer hood/engine bay than other cars of the same size. Their cars are ripe for an inline-6 upgrade since they wouldn't even need to elongate the hood to fit an inline six in any of their current cars (except the miata).

The inline-6 seems to be making a comeback.. and not just with Mazda

and we are all better off for it. V engines are only good for packaging. Inline is so much better in every other way.

Like EE mentions, V6’s are good for some packaging characteristics but not every packaging characteristic. Probably better for short compact hoods, better crash safety, better for more interior volume, better for a shorter wheelbase, and better for weight distribution. There are other benefits to V engines like an inline 8-12 would not only be bad packaging, but the block would be so long that it might be susceptible to flex. It might be harder to get air into the cylinders evenly too without multiple throttle bodies.

Inline engines are better for simplicity, better for total weight of the engine, better for room for suspension geometry, and easier to service. Inline 6’s and higher don’t make for great transverse packaging and thus force weight in the form of RWD setup with a driveshaft. V8-V12’s sound pretty good. So do I6s but I don’t know about I8-I12s

They have other benefits and these lists aren’t exhaustive; they just illustrate the fact that they have different packaging, not necessarily better, and they have different advantages, not necessarily making one better than another.

Do they? It is not at all apparent to me that the Mazda3 and Mazda6 have particularly longer hoods/engine bays...

Are you aware of how the engine is oriented in Mazda's cars other than the Miata? Why should hood length even matter when the engine is transverse?!

None of Mazda's cars is at all ripe for an I-6 engine transplant. IF any of them is it actually is the Miata. But they'd either have to elongate the wheelbase or give it a proboscis monkey nose...
