Is there an easy way to root these radios? I'm failing to find a good DIY...

Yes it's really simple. Think it's been covered on here somewhere. Or if you jump over to XDA it's explained there. Don't remember process off the top of my head.

I just picked up one of the 2gb Intel units. This page on XDA may help some of you. https://forum.xda-developers.com/and...-tips-t3555249

Which unit? Did you go with the widescreen one? And what did you get for harnesses/cables if you don't mind me asking? I'm sick of the stock head unit already in my '17 86 lol

Check out this thread for a DIY on the 16/17s. It's a little more involved since you need a voltage step-down for the rearview camera, but it's pretty straightforward.

I'm still testing the unit on my bench and I just received my harness so I haven't put it into the car yet. Joying sells a Toyota harness with a lot of features that it seems no one has tried yet. Once I get my car back from the engine rebuild I'll be throwing it in and I'll let you know. Here's the unit I purchased. So far on the bench it performs very well.

I would like to switch to one of these newer units. Though I like the enhanced sound of the custom malaysk ROM. That should be easy to do with Xposed correct? Or is that only on custom ROMs?

As long as you can root it, you should be able to install viper4android like Malaysk has packed into his ROMs.

He also has a ROM for PX5 based units now (Dasaita, Eonon, etc.):

There's also a big-ass thread on audio mods/tweaks on the Intel Sofia units:

I was doing some racing on XDA. The Malays rom thread mentioned that you don't need to root before flashing the rom, just flash from recovery, clear the cache and reboot?

Yep, that's it...it will already be rooted after installing. I've developed the habit of wiping cache/data reset two or three times...I seem to remember reading many instances of people having all kinds of weird problems that multiple wipes corrected. Dunno if it really does any good but it can't hurt

What's the trick to getting into recovery mode on these? I tried hold power+reset > hold power, and I tried hold power > press power.

No dice so far
