Lemons is the way to go. $500 for the gear then just buy seats on teams for around $500 on the lemons forums. Travel is not as bad because you don't have to tow anything. Also helps that you don't have to pay for the build or parts up front

Wow , those fuel burn rates are stunning!
I won 3 NASA MW endurance championships in the E3 class, in large part to being able to run almost 2.5 hours on one tank of gas in our 944 Spec car. We'd splash in 5 gallons during a driver change, and have a 40 second pit stop for a 3 hour race. The SM's had to take 12+ gallons, and were running on fumes by the end. The 4.5 hour enduro was easily done in one stop. It helps that the late 944's had a 21 gallon tank (vs 12.5 in a Miata) , but we also only burned about 8 gal/hour. 12.5:1 AFR's. Surely the FA20 could be tuned to run less rich? Tunes are free in TT/PT, at least. Last edited by Sterling Doc; 12-26-2013 at 09:37 PM. |

At road Atlanta running 1:48s stock at 2775 competition weight, I was much closer to 10 mpg. That would mean a full tank would be just over 70mins. That's about the same as my NA miata. NASA-SE has 80 mins of track time each day, and I can usually fill up once, if just barely, for the full day.

I must not be pushing it hard enough. I was doing about a 2 min lap stock and burned half a tank in one day wih NASA-SE.

I drained ~14 gallons it 4-20 minute sessions at MSR-Houston, about 7 laps a session at 2.28 miles is about 4.5 MPG. Had I been running as quick the first 4 as I did the last ones it probably would have been a bit lower.
Adding up cost for NASA Time Trails for the weekends its going to be a good bit, about $1000 after fuel for car, truck and trailer, entry fee, consumables, food. I can at least bum places to crash in New Orleans or Houston so that helps. I am thinking I will give the time attack thing a try for a year between the national autocross series events. If REALLY get the itch to go w2w at the end of the year I will just consider going Spec Miata or DD2 Rotax karts, I am 24 so getting beat on by a kart on the weekends doesn't bother me yet and its probably going to be the most competitive thing I can get into for the cost.
