I wonder if @robispec would be willing to comment on the factors contributing to his success? Why is he not still using his original engine?

I bet if he was able to come up with a TRUE solution it would sell like hotcakes.

Not sure I understand your wording? Are you saying he is or is not using the stock engine?

I thought you were running a 91/100 mix?

Good to hear that! I'm just above 15k after 15 months of ownership. I'm a fairly conservative (read boring) driver.

Hopefully the 2015 WRX will have better seals being it is a turbo car.
They're no different from other DI engines from Audi and BMW, or even Toyota/Lexus.

The problem is specific to the platform, not the seals themselves.

Yeah, they are really abusing those cars. Video game reviewers driving with an instructor in an automatic equipped FR-S. Blatant!!!

Almost every car I've owned has had some sort of problem that everyone worries about. I had an e36 M3...everyone worried about the oil pump nut backing off. And the rear shock mounts failing and tearing the shock towers. And the subframe tearing at the diff mount. I could have replaced that with an E46 m3 but boy were those popping motors! My Forester XT was a blast but everyone was worried about those darn glass transmissions. Had a Mazdaspeed3...the forum community literally had everyone convinced not to put load on the motor at low revs because those motors just love to explode when you do that. The one car I owned that didn't have an exaggerated failure rate was my 335d. Ironically, pretty much everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. It had well over $15k in warranty work in one year of ownership. Funny because I avoided 335i's because those had so many fueling issues, turbo issues, etc, etc...

I don't know what to say about the FR-S/BRZ guys. The problems that have been reported seem pretty damn similar to the problems that happen with all makes and models of cars. Some problems are likely more prevalent since these cars tend to be tracked more as well.

I have 25k miles on my BRZ. It hasn't been tracked, though it's seen quite a number of high speed autoXes (1.2 mile long courses deep into 3rd gear). It gets daily driven, with a mixture of responsible driving and hooligan-esque fun. So far so good here. Not that I don't worry from time to time, but I worried with all my old cars too. I'm tired of worrying. So instead I just enjoy the great toy that I have. If it breaks...well....so be it.

DI allows for more precise placement of the fuel inside the cylinder as well as better atomization.

I'm no engineer and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn express last night... but wouldn't making a stronger seal out of some non-heat conductive material, like aluminum or some kinda composite material, keep the seals from degrading to the point of failing?

DI results in a cooler charge under any given set of circumstances because 100% of the heat of vaporization of the fuel is absorbed in the combustion chamber.

Sure. Just switching to a glass filled teflon might do it. Or changing the seal geometry, or who knows.

I wonder idly how much hotter than the coolant that cylinder head is getting. Maybe much hotter.

Anyone ever consider playing around with these (thermocouple spark plug washers)?
