OP forgot to mention that you cannot overrev the engine by missing a downshift (say going down from 6th to 3rd instead of 5th). The AT just beeps at you if you'd be above the rev limiter when downshifting. For example, 2nd to first is impossible if you're above ~29mph.
Aside from clutch kick, slipping the clutch, and slower take-offs, my AT performs beautifully at autocross events. I just lose maybe up to a second because the AT sucks at launching (unless you're willing to left foot brake to stall the torque converter and potentially break stuff). Maybe 1% of the time I'm driving my AT BRZ do I think, "Hmm, it'd be more fun to click through the gears in a manual." The rest of the time I think, "Holy crap is this car effortless to drive and fun to boot." OP may have also not tested hard braking in sport mode to find out that the AT does auto-blip down shifting under hard braking in [D]-Sport... First time I experienced that I was all grins. |

So, all but one of my cars since i was 16 have been manual... I fell for the allure of a true twin-clutch paddle shifted gearbox when i purchased my ralliart sportback a few years ago. My rational at the time was it was a pure sport transmission not a fancied up automatic. It was awesome... there is simply no way a human can shift faster than a properly mapped twin clutch gear box.. and it worked well in automatic mode too for the daily commute.
But, you just can't beat a good manual for ANY kind of sport driving... Sure it's fun to hear the ecu blip the throttle on a paddle down shift and the acceleration is no doubt quicker (given the same ratio's)... is just so much more rewarding to heel-toe and so much easier to skip down shift.... 6th to 4th on the interstate for example rather than 6th-5th-4th.. I guess I am an MT fanboi.

You know, I read this entire thread and thought "I don't know how to heel-toe very well, maybe I should've gotten the AT...". Then I drive my MT BRZ with KB SS and think, "Naaaaaah. I'm good."

I do this all the time in the AT, 6th to 4th, or even to 3rd is not an issue. You can double/triple tap it down without going through the sequence between.

..Hi,
what about differences in clutches 1. Does the MT feels more direct vs/ AT? 2.How clutch in MT feels (rudged or soft like in latest turbo with flywheel)? 3. How the general feel of whole system AT vs MT in terms of "one piece together"= motor direct connection to transmission? I need to take decision in next 2 hours for choosing AT vs. MT Thanks in advance!!! |

We drove both, and chose the auto, to our surprise. Took it to the track last weekend too for two days, and it was dreamy. A guy who races a manual FRS (and set the track record for his class that day) said he wouldn't want to compete against an equally built auto. He'd lose. I've been able to heel/toe shift for almost 20 years, so yes, I understand the attraction to manuals, but this auto is the best short of an M3 or 911. First day, second session. No overlay on this one. I think I put overlays on the rest. This looks so slow now after making up better times through the weekend. And sorry for the crappy ticking sound. I have no idea where it came from. [ame]http://youtu.be/VusXGNpavU0[/ame] |
