Michelin Cup 2016 - Round 6 Redstar Raceway felt like a calm day.

It was a little frustrating with Redstars transponders, as a few participants didn't get times in the first session,
After bring this up with the time keepers who were not he best organised,
We got assured it would work if we stick it correctly in the second session, .....and again it didn't work.
It was just disappointing to go out and try your best and then not having a result afterwards.

By the third session, most of the transponder issues were resolved, and it was getting interesting,
@LostSalad was improving significantly through the day, and I am sure if he went out for a few more sessions, would have kept improving

Welldone to @Fish Eagle for making the 86's proud and finishing 7th overall for the day!
I watched the BMW M4 tring to catch him while @Fish Eagle was doing casual runs with a passenger, and the BMW M4 was struggling to catch up! Epic driving!

Here is footage from one of my quickest laps,

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2t2LQ3E4LyA"]Michelin Cup ZA 2016 round 6 - RedStarRaceWay Toyota 86 NA - YouTube[/ame]

I personally prefer the counter clockwise track,
Probably because of the thrill you get from late braking at turn 1

All in all, it was a great, clean, healthy competitive track day.

My highlights of the day was watching:
1) Wayne Hay in his STi battle Marius in his GTR, and

2) Marco (328i) battle Zayed(328i), who were fractions of a seconds apart (2:20's/2:21's),
They went out in the last session to battle it out on an empty track and try to beat each others times.
From watching them drive, you could almost feel the intensity
and see each driver trying their best to improve their times.

Those cars handle so beautifully around the bends, its a pleasure to watch live.
Both of them improved their times,
Marco broke into the 2:20's and Zayed broke into the 2:19's.

They thought they were fighting for 1st place in the NO class, but at the prize giving.......

As the usual saying in life ..."no matter how fast you are, there is always a golf 1 out there that is faster than you".

Lol - Yes, there was a normally aspirated Golf 1 who did 2:18 flat ! lol
(and no one knew or kept an eye on it)

Entertaining day!

I hope to see more of you out at the Michelin Cup events,

Cheers

That M4 is a stunning car, and an awesome colour too.

Here's a short clip from the end of that session. I was on my cool-down lap when that M4 came past just before the dogbone, and I couldn't resist giving it a quick squirt and chasing him through a few corners. We were two big guys in my 86, and the M4 was one up.
You should be able to see why an 86 can hold it's own with a car that's so much more powerful... It's so easy to catch up in the corners.

BTW, the guy in the M4 must have been driving it well because he almost exactly matched the best lap time that a friend of mine achieved in his M3 of the same generation. My friend's a BMW advanced driving instructor, and he knows RSR well.

We all know how VW change their data so, I'm sure we can exclude the golf. Well done everyone , I would of been at Red Star on Friday, Saturday and Sunday but I caught the flu and just couldn't justify driving heavily medicated , so I was disappointed that I missed such a rare opportunity.

That Golf is an out-and-out racecar, and despite me thinking that I'd done well at Zwartkops in Feb, he nailed me - with a 1m15.0 around the Z

Here's some pics of it thanks to @Mandarb

I thought part of the point of Michelin Cup is... that it's not racecars, but the general public using street cars. Did I miss something?

Hooray!!
Eventually I got my RaceRender to work, so here's the video of my fastest lap with speedo, timing, etc.
(Same video as a few posts ago)

I can clearly see what I've been trying to do in an attempt to get my lap times down -
which is not worry about corner entry and mid-corner speed, but focus on building speed out of the corner into the straight.
And that's worked for me...

Registrations for the 2017 Michelin Cup season has opened up:
http://www.michelincup.co.za/Home/Registrations

Entries close 15th January 2017!

From having participated in the 2016 season alongside @Fish Eagle and @LostSalad I can vouch:

- That this is one of the best forms of Social / 'Club' Racing Championships/Cups that Gauteng and South Africa currently has to offer,

- You race at your own pace (Reduces risk)
(These are time trial events).
(This isn't like the inland championship were 10 cars start at the same time, and the first to finish 15 laps wins - it's fastest lap times that count in Time Trial racing).

- Events are strategically and efficiently organised + social element.
Which translates into a value proposition of the Michelin Cup (As opposed to a open track day) allowing for more track time + experienced drivers/racers interaction = enriching track experiences = you becoming a better driver/racer.

For me personally I took loads of learning experiences out of the 2016 Michelin Cup,
From the preparation,
Race day intensity and
Post race analysis
....it was an experience that I won't forget.

Competition drives me,
Allows me to understand and push my own limits,
and in the Michelin Cup, the competition... Inspires me.

For some you meet in the events,
Drag(1/4mile) is all that matters, others... search for perfection around the track,

The fearless always push the limit.
Or crave the thrill of the competition.

How you race.... is up to you.
Need for Speed inspired quotes

It would be great to see more 86’s this year!

See you on track!

Is there a list of registrations to date available online anywhere?
I'm very curious to see who's entered...
