At least not that I saw when I read it.

So I have no idea.
Yeah, at the beginning in the required parts area it lists Techstream, but then there's nothing in the instructions about an ECU flash. Definitely think it's bullshit that they included that blurb implying that if you don't proceed with getting the recall performed, you won't be able to register your car in the future.

On one hand it says "The state of California requires the completion of Safety Recalls / Service Campaigns on emission related parts prior to vehicle registration renewal." that reads like a general fact about how if there's a recall that affects emission related component, then you'd have to have it performed in order to register in the future. That generally makes sense. Then it goes on to say "Without the completion of this FREE Safety Recall Campaign the California Air Resources Board (CARB) will not allow your vehicle to be registered." and this reads like it pertains to this specific recall notice.

I guess since the engine is being completely torn down and put back together, that technically that will change (even ever so slightly) the amount of emissions that it produces. And therefore that's why they're considering it an "emission related" recall. No idea.

But holy hell is this complicated and involved! A freaking engine-out procedure!? Crazy. Almost seems like it would be cheaper/easier for them to fully swap in a new motor, if you consider the labor costs, as well as how delicate some of the steps in the instructions look. Stuff like tolerances of the gasket maker material when re-assembling the valve covers, and the progressive and ordered torque specifications when re-assembling other areas.

Curious to hear about how other's experiences go. Seems like there's an awful lot that could potentially go wrong.

just as an FYI - the recall procedure involves removing and reinstalling all four spark plugs (pg 128 - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uUi..._dVLZl_w7/view), so the dealer should have no problem replacing with new plugs at no additional labour charge.

That's a new spin. Any way you could scan the doc and post? This sounds way fucked.

Emissions compliance, yes, but this is my goddamn property.

Well I guess my spark plugs are getting done, and my failed coilpack had good timing.

They can't not do it. Seeing as they have to remove the manifold, stock or not and it doesn't change the process then I can't see the issue. I've been talking to my tech about getting them to do my SC'd car and he can't see the problem.

If you pay for new spark plugs.....

As does any service manual. It seems a lot of people search for DIYs when the actual service manual already has the DIY but better.

I was being facetious.

I would never attempt this type of repair. I know my limits as a mechanic. Additionally... I got my recall letter, so they will do the repairs for me.

Just dropped it off and waiting for rental car. The service rep showed me the invoice as they had just finished one,. $1200 parts in labor, $1300 in parts.

Getting a F150 as a rental since the dealership uses Enterprise.

What dealership are you using? The one nearest me in Jonesboro inspired zero confidence when I talked to the service manager and he had no idea the frs had a Subaru motor in it.

I just received my FRS from the dealer after the recall repair. It took them almost 2 weeks. So far everything seems ok. This was their first recall repair for the valve springs.
