Folks just need to understand that buying a new car is a bad investment. No matter what you do you are going to lose money and there's not much you can do about it. Keeping your vehicle stock and maintaining it impeccably will help to preserve value but you will still be losing money, maybe just not as much. If you can't handle the loss then you should reassess your car buying habits.

My car buying philosophy is to carefully consider my purchase (no impulse buying and thus no regrets), save up for the purchase (pay cash), buy new cars only (I don't trust how others may have maintained or driven their car before resale), carefully maintain the vehicle after purchase, and then keep the vehicle for quite some time.

As an example, 14 years ago I paid cash for my 2000 Toyota 4 Runner 4x4. It currently has 171,000 miles on it, it still looks good and is in excellent physical and mechanical condition. In fact, I'm hoping to get another 10 years out of it as a utility/winter weather vehicle enabling me to keep the FR-S as a for fun car. (I fully expect to keep my FR-S for at least 10 years.)

It's even possible that someone who bought the car after the First 86 got theirs has an earlier serial number because the 1st86 were not all built first, they were just pulled from the production run based on the winner's color and transmission preferences.

We do have a console and glovebox plaque that indicates its a 1st86 car, but they all say "1 of 86". The 1st86 group decided to have it done that way during our Long Beach trip.
Those were some exciting days!

For those of you guys looking to sell already, what do you plan to replace it with?

No plans to sell, ever. Made that mistake with MK1 MR2 and still regret it. At some point it will become a garage queen/weekend car but one of my grandkids will probably sell it as a "barn find" after I'm gone.

So, I have been serioualy looking at buying an FR-S for a while now. But not as a long term car, just as a toy to screw around in.

I just got made an offer today from the Toyota dealer for 19k on a certified preowned 2013 with 15000 miles on it.

They had been trying to sell it for the last two months priced at 21,000.

I fear even after owning for just a year, i might have trouble selling the car for even 15k!.

Yeah, not sure how wise this car would be for short term ownership. I too plan on keeping mine for at least 10 years

I'm on the other end of this problem, I'm currently looking for a used 2013 FRS, and they're actually quite expensive lol. I'm in Canada so with the conversion rate the prices are slightly higher, but most offers on Craigslist or at dealerships are around 24-25k for a used 2013 car. Is this even a reasonable/good price? What would you guys be selling for up in the States?

You wouldn't happen to be interested in selling, would you? :P I could give you better than what the dealership offered haha

PM'ed you.

I think if you have cash you should just make a low-ball offer maybe a couple thousand under asking?

Deep down I want to keep this car for 10 years maybe 15 to hand down to my niece as she looked pretty interested in driving at such a young age lol. If this car holds up like my RSX's, I only see a few thousand in maintenance/tires and a new clutch after a decade of good use.

I was thinking of waiting until after the 2015s started coming out, I think they're going to start production within the next week or so? I'm not sure if car depreciation works that way, but at the very least a dealership might lower their price tags once new stuff comes out lol
