Yo dawg, how you like your 86? You turbo that FA20 yet? I heard it's kind of like my DC5 without it which is mad slow, might as well have gotten an EG and saved some money up for a real ride like an R32. In the meantime wanna race? My brother's FC just got out of the shop and my cousins NB turbo just got a fresh tune.

Sounds more like you don't like how enthusiasts use dumb names instead of saying "I've got a '96 911" or '89 RX7 or '90 Skyline or '99 Miata.

It's the numbers.

996 911 with a 991 3.4L flat 6 conversion, running 997 turbo brakes.

It hurts me brain.

Oh, in that case Porsche may not be the marquee that suits your nature, might want to stick to American and Japanese makes...

I know a guy with a bunch of trick BMW's, they're basically wagons (3xx/5xx whatevers) with M powertrains and suspensions, one of them had less than 100 produced, I can't even fathom a detailed lecture on them. And this isn't a German thing, there's a dizzying array of Alfas, Fiats, SAABS, Volvos (dude it's a 240 with a V70R swap but the 740 suspension is way stouter) not to mention all the shared stuff on the British cars (the GT6 has the TR6 motor but it's built off a Spitfire chassis). At least the American cars have distinctive names "Yeah my Mustang was a 6 cylinder but I pulled the V8 from a Galaxie and nabbed the suspension out of a scrapped Cougar".

911 is a model-line. 993 is more akin to chassis/generation code (it's the internal development code for that model/chassis 911) like ZC6, ZN6, GDx (2nd generation 02-07 USMY Impreza).

It's simple. Complex cars requires complex names. Their tags need to sound as complex as they look!

Remove the S badge from a 911 and it loses $40K value, instantly.

I think you need some more qualifiers in there...

Obviously talking about newer 996, 997, and 991 Carrera 911 S models; also an obviously gross over-exaggeration.

I agree, it is confusing and ridiculous, even for a car enthusiast like me. But it doesn't change how damn good most Porsches are. My only REAL complaint is that they refuse to put a non-castrated engine in a Cayman... I think a Cayman S chassis with 400hp easily would have topped the 911 Carrera 4S in Motortrend's 2013 Best Driver's Car contest. A 4WD Cayman with 4WS might also be interesting...

It would kill the 911, though there is quite something special about an engine in the wrong place.

Kinda like anal.

Oh, too much?

Now just because you cant remember the chassis codes of corresponding model years doesnt mean its nonsensical or random. Porsche people have been around for a long time and chassis talk is the lingo of the trade, plus it makes it easy to spot newbies. Have you been around the subie crowd at all, chassis code is also popular there.

So an e30 M3 with an e46 engine swap and e92 brakes is less confusing?

How about an EG civic with a DC2R suspension swap and DC5R engine swap, or an FB RX7 with an FD engine swap and FC brakes?

It's all the same shit, some companies use purely numbers, others use a mix of letters and numbers and others use just letters.
