The majority of people have no idea what it is.
Because I have the toyota 86 I get even more blank stares of confusion since the name is only two years old.

Last week while in drive thru I got "is that a ferrari??" at the window. LOL
"It's a toyota"

When i tell people the price they say "it looks more expensive then that". I say to them that it proves that a more expensive car doesn't necessarily mean a funner car.

I cannot say that this car is cheap or that it looks cheap. At least is some countries around the world it isn't cheap at all. For the uniformed readers, in Germany its price starts at 39k USD and in Netherlands climbs to 62k USD. A percentage of this price is because of taxes, but another percentage is because of different pricing policy. The US is a big market with over 40 billion dollars per year on Japanese passenger car imports, so I can assume that companies can have more freedom on selling certain models with very small margin or maybe sometimes with negative margin ...

I have received many comments on my FRS's. People think it's a more expensive car. My red 16 really get's attention. Personally, I think the exterior looks semi-exotic.

The only comment I've ever gotten is,
"Subaru? Nice, it has all wheel drive!"

Oh man, if I had a nickel for every time. I'd have like 20 cents but still.

While I was looking for my 86 I had a Lexus dealer with a used BRZ swear up and down this one is a limited and has AWD

It definitely looks more expensive than it really is. Also looks a heck of a lot faster than it really is, which is probably a lot of the reason for why it isn't more expensive.

I went to a dealer recently and had a long, hard look at a BRZ tS. I took photos of it to show the wife. She was not impressed with the fit and finish of my Inazuma and could not understand why it was so expensive. She found the tS even worse. She is correct in pointing out that the tS model is not worth the $8,652 more than the out the door price I arranged for my Inazuma.
Some areas of the car “ARE” cheap looking. Like all its shiny piano black plastic interior bits and orange peeled paint. I can’t believe how bad most Subaru’s paint finishes are. The wife’s 2016 WRB STi is terrible for orange peel and dull areas.

Had to take a neighbor to get his wife's car at the shop last week. He drives a 2018 ecoboost Mustang. He's always gawked and made a lot of positive comments about my car. But I could tell when he finally sat in it...he was a little stunned. And I swear this drive had to have been the most rattle-y drive I can recall. He was feeling the H&M pleather doors and did. not. say. a. word.

My wife isn't impressed with the interior either (base model 86)
But we're coming from a BMW so that's kind of her standard. This car is never going to be at that level.

However just being in the upgraded 86 GT trim it already feels better. Not luxury car levels by any means, but already a step up to a respectably not-so-cheap level (Pretty much like going from a Scion tC to a corolla IM). And that was really just from the leather/acantara seats and the better looking auto HVAC center stack.
