2018 Ford Mustang To Ditch V6 And Adopt 10-Speed Auto

Quote:
It seems as though the facelifted 2018 Ford Mustang will lose the current 3.7-liter V6, making it solely available with the EcoBost 2.0-liter four-cylinder and the naturally-aspirated 5.0-liter V8.

According to Mustang6G, the body type codes for the V6 are now longer valid in the dealer system for the Mustang, suggesting that the engine will soon be resigned to the history books. This isn’t all that surprising considering the four-cylinder is more fuel efficient and more powerful, delivering 310 hp versus 300 hp of the V6. The turbo also has an extra 40 lb-ft of torque.

Beyond the abandonment of the V6, it has been confirmed that the new Mustang will be available with a 10-speed automatic transmission co-developed with General Motors and already in use in the updated Camaro.

Perhaps even more significant than the option of this new gearbox will be the availability of the advanced MagneRide dampers for both the EcoBoost and Mustang GT models. These shocks are only currently available on the Shelby GT350 and GT350R and play a huge part in making those two such track monsters.

Elsewhere, it is reported that the new Mustang will receive an additional performance package, poised to compete with the Camaro 1LE package.

2018 Ford Mustang Facelift Loses V6, Gains New Face, 10-Speed Auto And Digital Cluste

Quote:
After a successful career of almost two-and-a-half years on the market, the sixth-gen Ford Mustang is getting its awaited facelift for the 2018MY.

The mid-life refresh brings on a tweaked face for the 2018 Ford Mustang, courtesy of the new headlights, redesigned front bumper, a wider front grille and a resculpted bonnet that’s 20mm lower. At the back, we see new C-shaped rear light clusters, the diffuser that is now finished in black, and in the GT, a small rear wing.

The big news is that Ford is ditching the 3.7-litre V6 option from the range as it was already the weak member of the sales chart, with the company focusing instead on the 2.3-litre EcoBoost and the 5.0-litre V8 versions which now gain a new 10-speed automatic gearbox option.

The manual gearbox that’s paired with the 5.0-litre V8 has also been upgraded with a twin-disc clutch and a dual-mass flywheel while the new ten-speed automatic is said to offer faster shift times and responses than the outgoing six-speed automatic.

The V8 engine itself is also getting a refresh, gaining a direct injection and port fuel injection which makes it more frugal and more powerful at the same time but Ford hasn’t provided any figures yet. The 2.3-litre EcoBoost is also going to offer more torque than before.

Other revisions include the addition of an optional digital cluster with a 12-inch screen instead of the traditional analog gauges, offering three separate views –normal, sport and track mode. A new active valve exhaust system allows the driver now to adjust the soundtrack of the V8-equipped versions while Ford has also given the 2018 Mustang a range of active safety systems such as Pre-Collision Assist with pedestrian detection, distance alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist and Driver Alert System.

The new Ford Mustang also benefits from new shock absorbers, a new cross-axis joint in the rear suspension which allegedly increases lateral stiffness and new stabilizer bars to further sharpen the car’s responses and handling character. MagneRide adaptive dampers are also available as an option for the first time.

Finally, the interior now features “improved touch points” which is another way of saying softer plastics at the driver’s immediate vicinity, and visual cues aiming to give a more premium look. These include a new hand-stitched wrap with contrast stitching and padded knee bolsters in the center console, with the door handles, rings and bezels now finished in aluminum.

Ford will launch the new 2018 Mustang in North America this fall, so stay tuned for the full details.

It's still a heavy boat, obviously. We'll see what they do for 2020. But in the interim, I think it is a good refresh.

Variations on a theme. I also don't see why race has to come into this.

I get what they were trying to do with the lights, but now I'm getting Charger vibes. Not that good of a facelift.

I figured I'd bump this.

I ended up buying a GT350, the 2017 with the magnetic shocks and the convenience package.

It's absolutely incredible. I have yet to take it to the track, but it's going very soon.
The car isn't like any muscle car I've driven before, it feels very special.

The biggest issue with this car is that you can't find one in New York for sticker price. I got one from Texas in the color i want for sticker, but when you include the price of shipping, i practically paid over sticker, but still saved $5000.

The FRS will be up for sale soon, it'll be below $10k and most likely one of the cheapest cars on the market due to its high mileage.

Congrats! I'm seriously considering moving onto one of these used in a couple years when (hopefully) the prices drop a bit. If you're ever in the SW CT area would love to see it and chat.

I had a chance to drive one of these back in the fall and totally agree with this statement.
The handling and driving characteristics are someplace between muscle car and sports car. Not quite either but a bit of both all at the same time.
It was impressive.

Very surprised a brand new 2016 is still sitting in the showroom at a nearby dealership. No Track Package but a $7,000 discount.

Of interest, the offices of Hagan-Berman, states on their website that no retainer fee is necessary to get involved in the lawsuit. It looks like 2016 owners without the Track Package, could get a transmission cooler and upgraded differential parts installed for free. It looks like some 2016 owners could feel entitled to perhaps even more compensation when all the dust settles.
