From what research I have gathered it would just need to be catted and not throw any codes.

I too am on the hunt for a smog-passing header, good ol' California

Nothing will pass visual.

Your best option is to wait and see what the 2017 model redesigned header will entail, or just swap back to stock when you need to smog the car.

What is new with the 2017 header? Are they changing it to fix the torque dip? I always thought the torque dip was to increase gas mileage.

If I got a catted header, it wouldn't be to pass smog. It wouldn't be to comply with the law. It would be meet emission standards for the good of the planet, and for the cool cops, they might not do a ticket. I was even thinking of getting a test smog done before and after to see the difference.

I feel your pain living in California. We can't have much more that a cat back. Even a simple intake must have a CARB number or you fail. My garage is full of stock parts in case I have to put it all back on for smog or to sell the vehicle. Even for my diesel truck!

I believe you need both to pass California emissions. Maybe not emissions in other states. But then again, I really haven't researched the maximum emission levels they require.

Two cats are needed to not throw a CEL. Pretty certain of that, right?

Do you want to pass the sniffer, or visual? One cat alone can pass a sniffer.

Pass the sniffer and dyno smog tests. And pass the nice cop test who sees a catted header n says oh well, on your way.
