I'm hoping that this is just aftermarket parts development. Changing the car in only a year makes me cautious about buying a FR-S or BRZ as a daily driver only to have it be out of date after one model year. Normally it's three years for a refresh and five for a completely new car. However, there are some instances where a manufacturer (Ford) did an exterior and interior refresh in 2010 and the new powertrains in 2011 for the Mustang. I guess anything is possible.
With a little research I've found a multitude of articles saying that these prototypes are just regular 86s with new factory options.

The Road&Track article is misleading.

Hopefully something I can afford when I need a new car a few years down the line. Driving my FR-S around makes me want to see what they bring to the party with the new Supra. I think I'll wait through a few model-years on that one though.

I hope that spoiler doesn't show up on the release series. It's not awful imo but certainly not my thing.

I doubt it. Most likely it will either be on a performance edition/TRD factory vehicle or maybe as an option package.

to lose 200 lbs i'd recommend:
-removing the useless back seats (insurance will go up)
-smaller battery
-remove spare tire (ouch!)
-lighter performance seats
-aluminum panels (doors, fenders, hood)
-lighter exaust
-do not add that rice wing

power wise I would bore that sucker to a 2.5 liter and bump the power to 220hp (realisticly) hopefully you get some usable power out of this.

20 hp more with 200lbs less would make this car feel the way it should.

The car looks very similar to the one unveiled a year ago, only changed from BBS wheels to the 18" 'crow feet' wheels which are a JDM option.

Edit: pic added.

Umm this is a current gt86 in Europe? There's no difference. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm admittedly lazy today so someone please help explaining this technical bit:

" The limited-slip differential is changed from a Torsen B of the standard car to a mechanical plate type and there’s a 4.3:1 differential as opposed to the standard car’s longer 4.1:1 diff. "

Just to add, the "crow feet" 18" wheels below are an original design by BBS wrapped in Dunlop DIREZZA ZII tires specifically designed for the 86.
