11k in repairs and 11k in depreciation... If they had Gap insurance and all that jazz it is cheaper for the insurance company to replace with a new car since the insurance company takes an insurance policy out with another insurance place on the car to cover new car replacement. Insuranception.. Really anything with a possibility of structural damage should be replaced.

On the bad side, everyone insurance goes up!

Strange thing is mine shot up to $115 for one month as a car adjustment then went down to 69 bucks this month... So all three insurance payments I have made have been different.

I'm confused.. If he got hit from someone else's fault, why would that effect our insurance... In fact any vehicle I've ever had, my premiums have never changed from what I was quoted unless they went down from just a good record, including my gixxer and those get wrecked daily...

To be honest, the damage to the structural parts of the chassis look enough that it could've done serious damage to the unibody (hard to say without seeing the car in person though).
Its not necessarily always the case, but why would an insurance company write you a check for 20k+ when they could "fix" it for 11k? I understand you can sometimes settle for the depreciation loss, but that still seems steep.

There are other factors to consider when determining a total loss. Some insurance companies put a lot of stress on safety; if major structural components are damaged or the damage looks like it could affect the overall safety, repairs are not allowed, even if it technically can be repaired.

It all depends on the standard that the particular insurance company holds their repairs to. There are some companies that will allow "repairs" to be done to crumple zones, which is generally a major "no no" with the biggest companies.

Then there are other factors like the difference between repairs and value after repairs; some states have diminished value laws, while others don't. Some adjusters at some companies will manipulate the value of the estimate/TL as a means of customer service if a customer really wants to keep their car and not have it declared as salvage (this only really happens with the estimate is within say a couple hundred bucks of the threshold for declaring TL).

Seems like there are more FR-S in the wreck yard than they are out on the streets now...

Drive safe people and always be vigilant!
