Question Which Transmission ?

I haven't seen any info posted on what transmission the FT-86 could get yet. I saw that the ADVICS brakes on the car is from a Toyota - Aisin joint venture. Anyone think that the FT86 will get the Aisin 6 speed then? Its used in the MX-5, RX-8 and S2000 so that would probably be a good choice.

Yes, that is what I've read. The Aisin 6 speed.

Heres the inevitable power hungry modder's question -- how much power can the Aisin 6 speed tranny handle?

If the Toyo is using the AY6 then it can at least handle 273 lb-ft since it's currently used in the Camaro V6 and some other cars.

It should definitely handle the torque from a 2L turbo.

From wiki: The AY-6 is a 6-speed manual transmission manufactured by Aisin. It is designed for longitudinal engine applications and can handle up to 345 ft·lbf (468 N·m) of torque.

Or it could be using the AZ6 which is an older transmission.

Well, it's going to have a variant of Subaru's awesome 2 liter boxer engine, but I hope that means it won't have that engine's weak 5 speed tranny. I own a WRX, and I granny shift the car to prevent problems. I miss that about my old Z. I could drive it like an ass, and that tranny would take it in stride.

Not that I've heard, but it's all still up in the air.

Toyota's been really sketchy with the details. The assumption of Asin trannys is based on what's available from the Subaru parts bin to mate up to the EJ20.

I suppose if Subie has been working on an SMG, it's quite possible. I'd definitely shell out for that.

No way this car gets dual-clutch. The trans would probably cost a lot to develop and Aisin hasn't even developed a dual-clutch yet.

Anyone here driven the the MX6 and RX8? How'd you like the feel of the shifter? I've driven an s2000 and it felt great, one of the best shifting trannys I've ever experienced actually.

I agree theres no way we see a fancy DCT type transmission in this car.

Thanks for the info!

Most transmissions wouldn't have a problem but many of us are hoping for an uprated system from the factory so that we can do power upgrades without any fear for the transmission. I could see people putting some very large blowers on this motor.. The AY6 sounds perfect! and we'll let the camaro guys learn the limits of that drivetrain ahead of us

I dont' see any negative reports on their V6 manual so it looks to be good. The V8 trans had some issue but that's unrelated to Aisin.
