I don't know much about NZ. Are their cars ridiculously expensive in general (at least compared to the US) like Australia? Or is this $100,000 price above and beyond what was "expected"?

A base Corolla is $19,000USD in the USA and $29,000NZD in New Zealand so the $100K NZD price tag may be a bit higher but is not as outrageous as it seems.

Because Australia tax

86 GTS = 43k
MX5 = 45K
WRX STI = around 55k
Mustang 5.0 = 70k
360Z = 60k

2018-19 new car price, on the road.

That's roughly drive away price, you can get cheaper if you use a broker.

For instance, the dealer wanted 55k for my STI, through a broker I paid 51k all up on the road.

My 86 was marked at 41k, due to being the orange limited edition with PP it was hard to sell, it sat at a few dealers for near on 8 months, in the end they just needed to move it as the 18 was being released, I paid 32k drive away, that was the best discount on a new car I have ever got.

The Zupra, well that might cost a little less here than in NZ, I haven't seen a price or number, but, due to the limited number there will be no "end of the month" deals to be had.

Very true but unless the car is a total flop, I do not believe that anyone is going to be able to buy a 6 cylinder Supra for $50K. Yes, I do know what the MSRP is supposed to be.

Canada is not too far behind these days in terms of prices, and we probably don't get as much features because we are always tied to the water down LHD versions from south of the border. RHD countries of course will get more of the good stuff from Japan.

Everytime I read online how people from the states complain about MSRP, they don't realized how good they already have it as cars are quite inexpensive compare to a lot of other places around the world.

The Zupra will cater to the hypebeasters for a while before the prices become stable.

The big problem when comparing prices is people only look at the dollar value of the product. It isn't that simple and prices can not be compared in isolation of all other factors. There are many things that impact prices in different countries and the dollar value of products reflect these. We do not pay more for cars in Canada when you consider such things as cost of living and mean income. In fact even though our dollar value appears higher we actually pay considerably less for things than they do in the USA. It seems like we pay more but we also make more so it all balances out.
