Oil Cooler Options for 2017 Manual BRZ 86
Due to the increased size of the air box on the 2017 BRZ (manual transmission), the Perrin oil cooler I used on my 2013 FR-S will no longer fit. Trying to figure out the different options. I did do a search, but didn't get all of the info that I needed in one place. Options seem to be:
1. Replace the 2017 air box with one from a 2013-2016, as suggested elsewhere by @CSG Mike. I've been looking around on eBay, and I'm not sure exactly what parts to get. Update: Parts #1, 4, 5, 8, and 9 below are needed. (Cost: Around $150-200, depending on if you buy used or new parts). Update (2/5/2018): Zach at Delicious Tuning confirmed that a 2017 with a 2013-2016 air box and replacement intake elbow will require some tweaking to the tune to run optimally. 2. Sell my Perrin oil cooler and switch to a Blitz: http://amzn.to/2xI1oMW I read somewhere that the way the lines come out of the Blitz sandwich plate will work with the 2017 air box. Can someone confirm? (Cost: $400 difference between selling my Perrin and buying the Blitz) 3. Switch to a cold air intake like the Perrin: http://amzn.to/2xI2yrP Seems like this might be the easiest option to create the needed clearance for my Perrin oil cooler (as shown below). Pull off the bumper, replace the intake and install the oil cooler. Was too concerned about running on the stock tune to go with this option. (Cost: $270) Open to other ideas, too. What are you all doing for an oil cooler on a 2017? Last edited by TofuJoe; 02-05-2018 at 01:35 PM. Reason: Updated Information |

For the route where you swap to the 2013-2016 air box, this seems like a good opportunity to add:
1. Perrin inlet tube (which includes the clamp) ($90): http://amzn.to/2wH414M 2. K&N filter ($48): http://amzn.to/2wHoExC Then the only other parts you would need are #1 and #5 in the diagram above (air cleaner case). Last edited by TofuJoe; 09-21-2017 at 11:34 PM. |

I decided to go with option 1. I got a Perrin inlet tube, bought a K&N filter with Amazon credit, and got the air box cover (part #1 above) on eBay for $66 shipped. I went this route because it cleaned up the engine bay, was closer to the stock setup than a CAI, and was the cheapest. Total spent: $186
Thanks to the guys at 86 Speed for the nice deal and great communication on some other parts I bought, too. |

I would have sold the old one and got a mishmoto one with a thermal sandwich plate. If you got 400 for the cooler then +180 and you could of had the new oilcooler and kept all your oem parts.
Break in your car properly then I would sudjest going to a 5 or 10w30 full synthic motor oil. With your oil cooler that will help stabilize your oil presssure and give you a little more protection. |

@Zentec - both my current Perrin and the Blitz have a thermal sandwich plate. I didn't consider the Mishimoto due to multiple reports of leaking.

Just noticed that the Perrin inlet tube is different for 2013-2016 vs. 2017 MT cars.
I ordered the 2013-2016 version. Hopefully that was the right call. Update: Yes, that was correct. See the post below. Last edited by TofuJoe; 09-21-2017 at 11:34 PM. |

Update after installation: Turns out you missed a part, CSG Mike. Part 5 in the diagram in the first post is definitely also needed.
Luckily, Neal at The Racers Line had a spare 2016 airbox on hand so I could get my oil cooler installed. Phew! Below is a comparison of the bumper side of the 2017 vs. 2016 airbox (part 5). They are different sizes by almost an inch. I've also included the diagram again. If you're using stock parts, you need #1, 4, 5, 8, and 9 from a 2013-2016 to run an oil cooler on a 2017 manual. I used stock parts #1 and #5, a K&N filter, and a Perrin intake tube for a 2013-2016. Note that the clamps that came with the Perrin intake tube did not work. They were not the right diameter, flimsy, and too narrow. Everything is working well now. Hope this helps someone out! |
