FR-S/BRZ vs 2013 Ford Focus ST II

Has anyone compared these two side by side? If so, what were the results?

I simply want to know which one's the better driver's car, which one's the better practical car, and which one's the better road tripping car.

2013 Scion FR-S -- 2.0l H4 (200 hp @ 7,000 rpm and 151 ft/lbs of torque @ 6,600 rpm), RWD, 6 speed manual (3.626, 2.188, 1.541, 1.213, 1.000, 0.767), 4.100 Final Drive, 6.2s 0-60, 14.8 quarter mile @ 93.6 mph, Curb Weight: 2,737 lbs, Engine Speed @ 60 mph: 2,650 rpm, Highway Fuel Mileage: 30 mpg, Weight Distribution: 55/45.

2013 Ford Focus ST II -- 2.0l Turbocharged I4 (247 hp @ 5,500 rpm and 270 ft/lbs of torque @ 1,750-4,500 rpm), FWD, 6 speed manual (3.231, 1.952, 1.321, 1.029, 1.129, 0.943), 4.063 Final Drive for 1st thru 4th and 2.95 Final Drive for 5th and 6th, 6.3s 0-60, 15.1 quarter mile @ 92.5 mph, Curb Weight: 3,223 lbs, Engine Speed @ 70 mph: 2,650 rpm, Highway Fuel Mileage: 32 mpg, Weight Distribution: 60/40.

I can answer that for you right now.

Better drivers car: The twins
More practical vehicle: ST II
Better for long trips: ST II

Thanks for the quick response. A few remaining questions: how much better of a driver's car is the FR-S? And, how can one modify/tune the ST II to make it just as good of a driver's car?

Well performance wise, stock for stock the ST is more than capable of giving the business to the twins but you'll never get the level of feel you get in the twins from the ST II. Also, the difference in drivetrain means the twins have higher potential than the ST II.

For what it's worth though, the way Ford set up the ST II it mimics the behavior of a RWD vehicle to a certain extent (at least I thought so, I've never driven a FWD vehicle that was so willing to oversteer). Once you really start to push it though is when you start to notice the differences and drawbacks of the ST II.
At the end of the day the ST II is better in a line and excellent in the twisties, the twins are 'okay' in a line and downright incredible in the twisties. Also one of the things to take into consideration; the twins come with an LSD, the ST doesn't but uses the brakes as a sort of electronic LSD. The difference is most noticable coming out of corners at close to full throttle.

You've probably heard it before but it's a lot easier to mod for power than tuning suspension components, you could spend hundreds of hours doing it and never get it right. Also, chances are most people don't have the ability to push either car to its limits so I personally say go with what you feel the most comfortable in (as in, what feels most natural). I test drove the ST and in the end all I could say was I liked the car but I expected more; the twins left less of that "this is lacking something" feeling.

Edit: Just realized I didn't even touch your question lol. Starting from driving feel and seating position alone the FRS runs laps around the ST as a drivers car. As to how you could tune the ST to make it a better drivers car, from my experience you can always tune a vehicle and make it loads better in every aspect but a true drivers car starts from the chassis up and is usually subject to subjectivism. So the real question is what is YOUR definition of a drivers car?

Focus feels heavier, throttle response is slower, gear shift position not as convenient (for me) and longer throw. More body lean on cornering. Very busy cockpit, lacks digital speedo right in front of you. I didn't play with touch screen but it couldn't be worse than the BMZ's. Seats good position and comfortable. It is much quieter. The torque makes it easy to drive. In summary I agree with SVTSHC. It

Thanks for the great input! I feel as if these cars are perfect competitors (which is why I posted it here) -- similar pricing, similar performance, similar efficiency, etc.

The best thing is to test drive both! I would love to drive the ST as it was one of the cars I was looking at during my cross shopping, reading etc..

I own an FR-S and have test driven an ST. Sadly, a test drive doesn't really allow one to know how a car is going to perform on a day-to-day basis.

Correct, but before the twins I was really excited for the ST. I know a test drive is very limited, but I would still love to at least get behind the wheel of one and compare what I can.

Exactly! I hope a side-by-side test is done in the near future.

We had a deposit on a focus ST

we pulled it after a test drive

fun yes, but just didnt handle right past 100...

spent a little more got her a 335i used instead

worse economy yes, but a more fun car to drive or crash in
the stickshift in the ST was just crap

Did 2k miles in one sitting in the FR-S, so road tripping really just matters how many people you plan on going with you. Plenty of leg room on the passenger side for a +1...as long as you dont plan on back seaters.

And I got 35mpg avg on that trip.

82mph from Phoenix to Murfreesboro TN, at which point I did a sprint into triple digits and abruptly found a smokey hanging out waiting for me. 1st speeding ticket, 17 yrs driving....oops. After that, I stayed at the limit haha.
