After a little over a year you have the following tuning options:

1. Ecutek - I could name 10 places that sell tunes and 20 places that live tune off the top of my head.

2. Open Flash Tablet- Haven't used it yet but it seems to be pretty neat.

3. ECU Flash/ BRZ Edit- Watered down Ecutek, mainly because it's free so it will take alot longer to be on the same level, but still, it does work.

4. Hydra EMS- Only for serious racers because of the price point and extent of it' ability

5. ???? This will be the next big thing, I promise you that AEM, Haltech, Etc. are going to support these cars at some point. It's just a matter of when, not if.

I come from the Honda world where $600 gets you enough tuning capability to make 1000 horsepower. But that didn't happen overnight, Hondata - the cheapest, best bang for your buck tuning for Hondas, came out in 1999 and is STILL being improved and developed a couple times a year. That's 14 years in the making.

These cars have more support in 1 year than most cars get in 5 years. It only gets better from here!

We have put together multiple twins that are pushing 190hp NA with bolt ons only, that's almost 40 horsepower without ever even opening the motor up. Just wait until camshaft technology develops for this car!

This,

for 1 year the progress is pretty great, and just think of how much maturing there is to happen.

I'm boggled by all the FI options... Basically we have a kit for anything you could possibly want after 1 year. That's crazy. Not custom jobs, off the shelf bolt on kits. I've lost count of how many different kits there are. Very reasonable prices too.

did they do too well? then why the huge torque dip. this ruins the entire day to day driving experience. i think they really dropped the ball and left our engines 40hp underpowered. at the current price i wouldve been willing to drop some extra cash for more displacement or FI from the factory.

{Smirk} didn't expect this to cause such a stir. I see the logic in all of the responses, yet I also come from the old AE86 camp. Having lots of FI options is great, but can you point me towards a set of performance camshafts? Intake manifold maybe? Proper NA headers? No one has produced any yet and the ones i talked to have said they arent working on it anymore (reasons were expensive, small market, not much power to be had).
I believe that what we will see in terms of performance parts to come are more FI kits and stroker kits something that goes against everything pure about the 86.

That is the reason why I believe TRD and co need to put something out there. 240hp at the crank should be attainable.

You do realize that if TRD does anything, it will be a supercharger...not cams.

TRD is coming out with a performance version with new cams...said no one ever.

I know some tuners aren't giving up - there are still a lot of cars out there that haven't burned up yet...

My signature, if nothing else, proves the market has an excellent assortment of parts, tunes. It's a great platform for Toyobaru

I think OP meant, whether he realized it or not, is that this engine does not have variable valve lift. That's going to limit the top end horsepower potential. Only the cams can be phased.

Honda calls all sorts of designs some variation of VTEC, but all their highest power-per-liter engines have had a switchable high lift cam profile. Toyota had two step lift on the 2ZZ engine. Subaru has it on some engines, and they call it AVLS, although it's really just a switchable high swirl/fuel economy cam profile. In terms of continuously variable systems, Nissan has VVEL on their 3.7 and 5.6 engines, BMW has Valvetronic across their lineup, Toyota has Valvematic (on only a few engines not sold in the US), and Fiat has Multiair which is a significantly different system.

Toyota has VVTL-i as well, and Porsche has Variocam plus, which was actually the basis for Subaru's first variable valve lift system, if I remember right.

Yes we all wish $600 would get us 50whp and 80wtq like the 2.0t Audis and VWs get but that only comes with pre turbod cars. We got RWD and an unlimited potential platform. You got the money you can make this car into anything you want. PROJECT car status.
