even more excruciating than that is being stuck behind a soccer mom in her shiny land rover with a foot of ground clearance crawling over speed bumps like it's going to scrape.

Honestly, I kinda do too... but then I might be a lil' prejudiced. I slam my Miata on occasion, but usually keep it at about 2" off the ground (pinchweld measurement). You find different "lines" driving it around town.

I can totally see how this came to be, and I can see similarities with the "rock crawling crowd" - of course at a lower scale...
