Talk to me about sumps
What is being developed, or is available, to provide enhanced performance, particularly for track users?

A sump is a low point in a system where liquids collect.
I once kicked a drain valve to hydraulic sump and lost ~ .5 m^3 into the bilge. It was attributed to bad design as the ball valve was in the way of a spot where someone would have to climb to get to another piece of kit. Frige compressor sumps are sealed and considered part of the refrigerant system so any oil added has to be added under pressure. But adding oil means oil and most likely refrigerant were lost and knowingly venting ozone depleting substances to atmosphere is chargeable. We have a system at work that uses a low, flat and open sump as an oily water settling tank. That sump really needs some baffles. The oil sump on my last modded car could be replaced with a larger aftermarket one, but it was often noted that unless you were racing in the desert, or endurance racing, it was useless as the oil would dwell too long and thus cool off too much. Thats everything I could think about with regard to sumps, at this very minute, but I might think about more. |

Oh as for what's being developed, foam sump baffles are stilll in a sort of beta stage from what I've read. They are being used but not to great success as far as I know.

We had the UKs 24hr race last weekend, the Britcar 24.
There were 2 FT86 entries, one from Toyota UK which is covered in a thread on here, and a second private entry. The private entry ( Rollcentre Racing ) blew an engine due to oil starvation. A result of using slicks and a bbk without addressing sump performance. So yes, in answer to your question.

Interesting. If it's a problem with oil pooling in a head momentarily then no amount of baffling in the oil sump will fix it. I wonder if an accusump or something similar wouldn't be a better option then?
www.accusump.com I wonder if Crawford would be willing to take pics of any baffles and or windage prevention measures? They did have a post asking for pic requests. |

An oil pressure gauge will give a good indication of how long an engine will last, and will tell you within a lap. Either pressure is OK, or it's NOT OK. If it's not OK there is no reason to start the race. So, did they start knowing they weren't going to finish, or did something else fail? |
