A basketball hoop? A motion sensor light won't stop a thief from getting into your car. Keeping your car in the garage is probably the best thing you can do. Out of sight, out of mind.

show this to your local police station. They might make a route around your house for a few days to see any suspicion in the area

Kids in my old neighborhood would routinely do this, and NEVER learn either. My roommate's car was left unlocked one night and they did the exact same thing. Got into his glovebox, moved stuff around, but found nothing they wanted to take. Tried to do the same thing with my car, but that car had an alarm system that was triggered when you pulled the driver's side door handle while it was locked. Woke me up at 3AM NUMEROUS times. One time I happened to be awake when they were making their rounds, and snuck I outside in the dark after hearing my alarm go off to see the passenger in a Crown Vic pulling latches of all the cars on the street from out the open window as they cruised at 5mph. They weren't even scared off by the alarm. So I yelled something like "go die in your mom" and they peeled away. Then I moved out of Oakland.
