Mine is July 2013 build. To make sure it isn't leaking, run a piece of paper towel along the bottom of the cam plate. I did this and sure enough there was oil residue. |

Well I brought my 2013 BRZ to the local dealership for this issue yesterday. I showed the service writer the leak and explained to him all the reading up I've done on this issue and how dealerships have errantly just sealed the plate only to have it start leaking again. So he calls me up today and says it's the valve cover gasket and it's on backorder until Friday the 14th. The plate will need to be resealed anyways to replace the gasket so we'll see if this fixes the issue. I'm cautiously optomistic.
At least they put me up in a 2014 Legacy. This is the 3rd time I've had it in for warranty service in the last year and each time they put me up in a loaner of my choice so that's cool! The first time was a 2013 XV Crosstrek and second was a 2013 Forester. All 3 with C(rap)VTs though. I was hoping for a 3.6R Legacy or Outback but no dice. UPDATE - 2/25/14 After dropping the BRZ off again last night for the oil leak issue, I just got a call from the service writer and they were unable to find the leak, which is bogus. When he came out to check the VIN and mileage I pulled a clean napkin out of my glove box and wiped the bottom of the plate to show him exactly where the leak was. He said they put dye in the oil and will have me drive it for a week then bring it back to check it out. I also had them check out a noise the throwout bearing makes when idling in the morning after the idle drops down to about 900 rpm. The tech thought it sounded odd so they ordered a new t/o bearing to have as a replacement if needed and will check it out when I bring it back next week. I'm not sure if that means they are going to pull the transmission or not... Last edited by pszuvela; 02-25-2014 at 03:08 PM. |

I have this problem too.
Plate is dry, but it seems that the leak comes from between camshaft housing and cylinder head. Does anyone have access to Subaru technical information system to retrieve following TSB?: Service Bulletin # 02-136-12R Pages: 4 Bulletin Description: The purpose of this Bulletin is to provide procedures for the diagnosis and repair of oil seepage which may be coming from the timing chain cover, front camshaft cap, camshaft carrier and / or upper oil pan. I'm curious whether this TSB is relevant to this oil leak issue. |

anybody get what i can only describe as burning oil or "hot" smell after driving for a bit, WITHOUT the cam plate leak? checked a couple times over ownership and has never noticed oil there, and i have no noticeable oil loss.

So, we are talking about two different leaks now? The plate and the valve cover? Sorry if I missed a few posts in this thread, but I'd be grateful for a clarification. Thanks. |

There are also few cases described earlier in this thread that the oil leaks from cylinder head cover gasket and rear camshaft caps. These two leak routes are connected because the plate plugs the upper (intake) right rear camshaft cap. The symptoms are same for both leak origins: oil spilled to exhaust causing burning oil smell. I seem to have the latter problem on both sides (left/right) of the engine. In my earlier post I wrote that leak on my car seemed to come under camshaft housing, but I checked my engine once more today using inspection mirror and came to a conclusion that oil comes from the camshaft caps and cylinder head cover gasket. I'm eager to see the Subaru TSB that I mentioned above because it might contain instructions to fix this more complicated oil leak that my car has. |

Smelled burnt oil in the cabin twice in two weeks. Took it in. Minor leak from both sides of the valve cover. Replacing both valve cover gaskets. Parts ordered so need to bring it in again in a few days for the actual repair.

My AT equipped FR-S has had this issue for quite some time. Oil levels always were fine so I put it off. Had a lot of time off this week so I took it in. Dealer found a leak on the passenger side. They mentioned another FR-S was in earlier with a similar issue.
Dye was added to the oil, taking it back next friday. Dealer said expect the engine to be pulled.

My engine was pulled out two weeks ago because of the oil leak issue.
Valve cover gaskets and rear camshaft caps on both sides of the engine were resealed. Oil leak to exhaust still continues. Oil is coming from the seam between camshaft housing and cylinder head. Engine will be pulled out again in two weeks. This time the repair will be quite thorough, basically all liquid gasket seams of the engine will be resealed again. Seems that I have gotten the worst case of this oil leak. Oddly, the cam plate has not leaked at all. Those of you who have burning oil smell coming from the engine I suggest you to check your engines and let the dealer sort it out under warranty. After warranty period this kind of oil leak will be very expensive to fix. |
